Job Description

The pastorate of St. Gabriel and St. Charles Borromeo Parishes, located in the Woodlawn/Pikesville area, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, hourly Maintenance Coordinator to repair, clean, and maintain the campus buildings and facilities. This parish helps to spread the Good News to a diverse and vibrant community. Reporting to the Pastor and Pastorate Operations Manager, the Maintenance Coordinator is considered an essential part of the pastorate team.

Essential Functions

Repair and Maintenance

  • Regularly inspects the parish campus and develops a list of advisable repairs and maintenance issues in a proactive manner
  • Consults weekly with the Pastor and Pastorate Operations Manager to update a Work List
  • Maintains, to his/her ability, the heating and air conditioning systems
  • Cares for and maintains the plumbing and electrical systems and all machinery
  • Handles general repairs and occasional requests for special projects on the parish facilities, such as carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, light fixtures, and mechanical
  • When professional service for a project, repair, or maintenance is required, informs the Pastor and Pastorate Operations Manager; contacts the contractor/vendor to arrange the service; supervises the work
  • Keeps all machinery, power tools, and equipment in a safe operating condition; operates and maintains them safely, according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Maintains a schedule of routine and preventive maintenance, as well as lubrication, to be followed, including a school boiler system; keeps a record of the work for all machinery in a binder
  • Adjusts and monitors building temperatures
  • Makes recommendations and requests for necessary supplies, materials, and equipment in a timely manner; arranges pick-up of supply orders; monitors the use of buildings to keep all operations within budget
  • Is welcome to recruit and supervise parish volunteers to assist with facilities projects
  • Attends staff meetings and team-building activities

Safety and Security

  • Ensures that buildings, enclosures, and doors are secure, locked, and alarmed when not in use
  • Responds to and resets alarms from the security system and fire monitoring systems; monitors and maintains CCTV cameras on campus locations
  • Checks the function of the fire suppression system and other facility operating systems on a regular basis
  • Keeps all safety devices in proper operating order; reads operating instructions and becomes familiar with the operation of the equipment
  • Contacts Police, Fire, and other emergency groups when necessary
  • Identifies and makes recommendations when safety and security issues occur

Grounds

  • Supervises and communicates with the landscaping company to ensure that all grass and shrubbery areas are cut and trimmed, with sidewalks and lawns cleared of debris and leaves
  • Waters, fertilizes, mulches, and trims the shrubs and flowers in the spring, summer, and fall months; ensures that gutters are clear of debris
  • Must be able to assist in emergency situations, such as when flooding or severe weather occurs. Manages snow removal: contacts the contractor to clean the parking lot in time for church functions; removes snow and ice from sidewalks and steps in time for services

Cleaning

  • Assists with preparing the church for worship on weekends
  • Helps with decorating for holiday events and seasons
  • Coordinates and assists with the setup and breakdown of rooms, equipment, tables, chairs, and cleaning for approved parish functions
  • Removes trash and debris from grounds and buildings on a daily basis and strives to maintain neat and welcoming campuses
  • Collaborates with Facilities Staff members to coordinate weekly custodial tasks such as vacuuming carpets, mopping floors, cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, dusting, and removing trash and recycling
  • Communicates with cleaning contractors and monitors their work

Position Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Some experience with Facilities and Grounds maintenance (especially plumbing, HVAC, and electrical) is preferred
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of, and experience in, maintenance and minor repair work in the fields of carpentry, electrical work, painting and minor drywall repair, plumbing, sanitation, mechanics, and janitorial care

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • General mechanical aptitude
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with other staff members, volunteers, church groups, and parishioners as a team
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license
  • Some ability to communicate in Spanish is preferred but not required
  • Ability to safely operate various types of manual and power tools and automated systems
  • Ability to lift fifty pounds independently
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend, and operate large equipment for extended periods of time and to move heavy furniture, equipment, and other materials
  • Ability to move within tight spaces where large and potentially dangerous equipment is stored and to ascend and descend ladders as needed
  • Ability to complete all necessary paperwork
  • Ability to self-motivate, manage responsibilities, and work independently
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish is preferred but not required
  • Must model Christian attitudes and behaviors and adhere to the Archdiocesan Code of Conduct

Pay Range: $20.00 – 22.00, Hourly
