Job Description

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for maintenance and janitorial duties of the Harbor Light Center.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take charge of operations when Facilities Manager is unavailable
  • Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment
  • Complete minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC repairs
  • Diagnose and fix lighting, heating, cooling, and appliance issues
  • Keep walkways and common areas safe and maintained
  • Oversee repairs and coordinate with subcontractors and janitorial staff
  • Prepare rooms for move in and out and conduct inspections
  • Maintain HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems
  • Ensure health and safety compliance and support emergency planning
  • Provide updates to Facilities Manager and Executive Director
  • Assist with deep cleaning tasks like windows and floors
  • Manage trash and recycling
  • Identify and report safety hazards
  • Inspect and maintain fire safety equipment
  • Respond quickly to maintenance requests and emergencies
  • Communicate major repair needs and coordinate contractor quotes
  • Maintain maintenance logs and property records
  • Help prepare reports for leadership
  • Track repairs, room turnover, and projects
  • Other related duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Valid CA driver's license (required)
  • Experience in building maintenance and repair work (1 year required)
  • OSHA Safety Certification (within first ninety days of employment – company provided)
  • First Aid and CPR certification (within first seven days of employment – company provided)
  • Tuberculosis clearance (within first fourteen days of employment – company provided)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work after hours and weekends (required)
  • Bilingual in Spanish (preferred)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Knowledge of property maintenance and repair practices
  • Basic skills in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of health and safety regulations
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries while working respectfully with vulnerable populations

  • Modern Office Equipment and Relevant Software
  • Relevant maintenance and janitorial equipment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
