Below is the summary of the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council and United States Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program:

This position is responsible for learning all phases of a maintenance repair. Learning will be demonstrated by successfully completing 576 classroom hours. Courses must be part of the University System of Ohio as specified in the Ohio Standards of Apprenticeship. In addition, the position is responsible for completing 8000 hours of on the job training including, but not limited to, hydraulics, electrical, mechanical and HVAC. The course work and on the job training will be completed in approximately four years, at which time the successful incumbent will meet the criteria to become a certified Journey-Person Under the State of Ohio Apprenticeship Program.

Qualifications

Essential Functions of the Job:

As an apprentice, the employee will be responsible to learn and then perform the functions listed below:

  • Install, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment, physical structures, pipe and electrical systems in commercial or industrial establishments.
  • Follow specifications, blueprints, manuals, and schematic drawings.
  • Utilize hand tools, power tools, hoist, crane, and measuring and testing instruments.
  • Visually inspect and test machinery and equipment.
  • Utilize electrical and electronic test equipment.
  • Listen for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction. Discuss variations in machine operation with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine.
  • Dismantle defective machines and equipment and install replacement parts.
  • Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery, using various applicators such as rags, brushes, and grease gun.
  • Install and repair electrical apparatus, such as transformers, electrical wiring and electronic components.
  • Lay out, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems, as well as related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
  • Repair and replace gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and other equipment of similar nature and scope.
  • Repair and maintain physical structure of establishment.
  • Install machinery and equipment according to blueprints and other specifications.
  • Install and program automated machinery and equipment, such as robots or programmable controllers.
  • Set up and operate machine tools, such as lathe, grinder, drill, and milling machine to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs and fixtures, and tools.
  • Operate cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
  • Fabricate and repair counters, benches, partitions, and other wooden structures.
  • Perform other related duties of similar nature and scope as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  • This apprenticeship program or position requires that the incumbent or employee demonstrates the ability to learn and then perform the above essential functions in the specified time period.
  • Ability to pass the related instructions (classroom) at a minimum grade of 70 percent
  • Demonstrated ability to determine root cause of problems by listening to employees and to learn how to determine corrective actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to actively listen and follow directions
  • Experience with continuous improvements
  • Knowledge of GMS and safety systems to ensure compliance.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED

Prefer Technical Education (e.g., completed vocational education in skilled trades)

Prefer experience working in an industrial setting

Working Conditions:

Work performed primarily in heavy manufacturing environment requiring frequent walking in and around a non-climate controlled metal manufacturing plant. Frequent exposure to noise, dirt, dust and fumes (rarely to the point of being objectionable). Extended periods of standing, walking and sitting may be required to meet production scheduling activities and lifting, pushing or pulling up to 50lbs, stooping, reaching, bending, and climbing in and around fabricated metal parts and manufacturing machinery and equipment. The apprentice must be able to work any shift with varying start and quit times.
