Mainframe Backup Administrator

We are hiring a Mainframe Backup Administrator to manage and maintain the integrity of our mainframe backup and recovery environment. You’ll be responsible for day-to-day backup operations, tape lifecycle management, and supporting disaster recovery activities to ensure data availability and compliance with SLAs.
Responsibilities
Manage and monitor daily mainframe backup operations using CA 1 (Tape Management System).
Ensure successful execution of scheduled backup jobs, troubleshoot failures, and perform root cause analysis.
Validate backup logs, reports, and error messages to ensure compliance with SLAs.
Perform tape operations and manage the full tape lifecycle, from allocation to offsite storage and destruction.
Data Protection & RecoveryExecute mainframe backups using ADRDSSU and FlashCopy.
Support resiliency planning, DR testing, and recovery execution during drills and real events.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in backup and recovery scenarios to minimize downtime.
Process & Compliance
Follow ITIL processes for Incident, Problem, and Change Management.
Maintain documentation for procedures, configurations, and recovery playbooks.
Collaborate with infrastructure, storage, and application teams to align backup strategies with business needs.
Experience
5+ years of hands-on experience in mainframe backup operations.
Strong expertise with CA 1, tape operations, and tape lifecycle management.
Proven experience with mainframe backup using ADRDSSU and FlashCopy.
Solid knowledge of mainframe infrastructure, storage management, and backup concepts.
Experience with resiliency planning, DR testing, and recovery execution.
Skills
Solid troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in backup and recovery scenarios.
Familiarity with ITIL processes: Incident, Problem, Change Management.
Ability to work in a 24x7 environment with on-call support as needed.
Strong attention to detail and communication skills for incident and stakeholder updates.
Nice to HaveExperience with IBM z/OS and storage subsystems.
Exposure to modernizing legacy backup processes or integrating with cloud storage.
Scripting experience in REXX, JCL, or similar mainframe languages.
