We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Application Developer with a strong background in enterprise banking and legacy systems modernization to support the delivery of critical technology initiatives within Retail Investments. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional technology and business teams to design, develop, maintain, and enhance scalable mainframe applications aligned with enterprise standards and operational objectives.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented and technically strong professional who thrives in complex environments, has deep experience with mainframe technologies, and is comfortable supporting both project delivery and production stability within a regulated financial services environment.

Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – Tuesday & Thursday in office, subject to change)
Contract Length: 3 Months (Strong possibility of extension or FTE conversion within 2–3 months)
Hours: 7.5 Hours Daily

• Design, develop, test, and implement mainframe applications aligned with business and technology requirements.
• Translate business requirements into detailed technical specifications and scalable application solutions.
• Develop and maintain applications using COBOL, CICS, PL/1, JCL, DB2, and VSAM technologies.
• Ensure solutions meet enterprise standards for security, resiliency, logging, and performance.
• Analyze upstream and downstream system dependencies to assess impact across integrated environments.
• Support production stability through troubleshooting, root cause analysis, defect resolution, and ongoing system support.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, developers, QA teams, and infrastructure partners to deliver aligned solutions.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, development standards, and modernization efforts.
• Review code, provide technical guidance, and support overall development quality and team effectiveness.
• Document technical designs, processes, implementation details, and support procedures.
• Participate in project delivery activities while balancing operational priorities and support responsibilities.
• Mentor junior team members and contribute to knowledge sharing across the development team.

• 3–5+ years of progressive mainframe application development experience within enterprise environments.
• Strong hands-on experience with:
  • COBOL
  • CICS
  • PL/1
  • JCL
  • DB2
  • VSAM
• Experience with EASYTRIEVE and FOCUS reporting tools.
• Experience working with z/OS environments and enterprise mainframe ecosystems.
• Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and ServiceNow for Agile delivery and operational support workflows.
• Understanding of software development lifecycle methodologies including Agile and Waterfall.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to independently manage complex technical issues.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
• Ability to support both project-based development and production support responsibilities.
• Experience analyzing integrated systems and managing application dependencies across enterprise platforms.

Preferred

• Exposure to AI technologies and mainframe modernization initiatives.
• Experience working with CSF Designer considered an asset.
• Prior experience within banking, financial services, or other highly regulated enterprise environments.
• Experience contributing to application modernization and operational efficiency initiatives.
• Knowledge of enterprise architecture principles and secure coding practices.
