Job Overview

The Executive Development Program provides recent graduates with valuable hands-on experience while preparing them for a career at Macy's. Through a combination of structured training, real-world business exposure, and meaningful project work, participants become integral members of a collaborative, performance-driven team that encourages innovation and the sharing of new ideas.

As part of the Buying team, you will help drive sales, margin, inventory productivity, and business growth through assortment planning and optimization. Buyers analyze product performance, customer preferences, market trends, and financial metrics to make data-driven decisions regarding product selection, merchandising strategies, and promotional opportunities. These insights help maximize sales, profitability, and the overall customer experience across Macy's stores and digital channels. As a Buying EDP, you will support the team responsible for shaping merchandise assortments across all Macy's shopping channels, including stores and e-commerce.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be placed into an Assistant-level position. The Executive Development Program is based in Macy's New York City corporate offices, with start dates offered throughout the year based on business needs.

What You Will Do

  • Receive professional development through a combination of hands-on learning, structured workshops, and collaborative projects
  • Build relationships with business leaders and team colleagues
  • Attend and participate in weekly business meetings to review and recap sales performance
  • Analyze business performance metrics and make recommendations to maximize the business based on trends
  • Collaborate with the team to develop an assortment strategy for key items and fashion
  • Competitive shop to analyze competitor pricing and trends
  • Assist in creating purchase orders
  • Track in-season receipts and resolve shipping issues with vendors
  • Regular, dependable attendance & punctuality

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Senior pursuing a bachelor's degree with a strong academic record; minimum 3.0 GPA preferred. All majors will be considered.
  • Strong retail math, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial and business performance metrics, identify trends, and translate data into actionable business recommendations.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas, reporting, and data analysis, with the ability to leverage data to support business decisions.
  • Understanding of retail math concepts, including sales, margin, markup, inventory productivity, turn, profitability analysis, merchandising, and assortment planning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation, storytelling, and influencing abilities.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret reports, procedures, and other business documents.
  • Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment while collaborating effectively with cross-functional business partners.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, relationship-building, and process improvement skills, with a strong sense of accountability, attention to detail, and commitment to accuracy.
  • High aptitude for learning quickly, making sound decisions, solving complex business challenges, and utilizing business systems and reporting tools.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
