The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Machinist. In this role you will, under limited supervision, operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. You will be responsible for applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties and layout and machining procedures.


Major Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Program, set-up and operate conventional, special-purpose and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC)machining including lathes, mills, surface grinders, multi-axis CNC equipment and water jet cutting and wire fed electrical discharge machines (EDM) to machine parts to specifications.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth andangle of cut.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to calculate dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
  • Fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by utilizing programming tools such as CAD/CAM and MDI systems.
  • Enter commands to retrieve, input, edit and validate computerized machine control media.
  • Fit and assemble machined parts and weldments into complete units as well as troubleshoot fabrication issues.
  • Measure, examine or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
  • Select and operate necessary cutting tools, hand measuring tools, power tools and horizontal and vertical band saws.
  • Conduct housekeeping of shop and equipment.
  • Other tasks as assigned by management.

Basic Qualifications:

  • HS diploma or equivalent with 5 or more years of recent verifiable work experience as a machinist or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a certified machinist apprenticeship program.
  • Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, layout techniques and shop safety.
  • General computer skills.
  • Ability to work and coordinate effectively with others and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made and ask questions as appropriate.
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • The ability to work effectively with others and maintain positive working relationships.

Special Requirements:

  • Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
  • Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
