Job Location: Independent Can Co Belcamp - Belcamp, MD 21017
Salary Range: $30.00 - $41.17 Hourly

Job Shift: 2ndSUMMARY:  The machinist will own the punch press die set maintenance program.  This will be accomplished by monitoring quality output of stamped components, determining when die sets need to be reworked, determining root causes of punch press quality issues, and monitoring die set life expectancy.  This position includes communicating with vendors about tooling and die component projects and ongoing maintenance.  Determine what components will be reworked or machined by the toolroom machinist, obtained from another plant, or purchased from a vendor.
The person in this role will support the maintenance team by managing spare parts inventory of plant equipment and consumable maintenance supplies including researching and communicating requisitions to the plant leadership team.  The person in this role will support and assist the maintenance team with equipment repairs and will rework existing machine components or machine new replacements.
In addition to tool & die related work, the person in this role will be an integral member of the maintenance team and will provide support by assisting with maintenance repair projects, specifying components needed, stocking spare parts, and providing technical support.  Support and drive implementation and usage of eMaint CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) on a daily basis for spare parts stocking, work orders, tracking breakdowns, repairs, PM’s, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain spare sets of die set components.  This includes grinding, sharpening, reworking, or making replacements of components and includes deciding if components need to be reworked or made at another plant or a vendor.
- Track and monitor the life and usage of sets of die components.  Plan for and decide when dies sets need to be removed and reworked.
- Check the quality of stamped components and take steps to correct problems.
- Directly support the preventive and corrective (repair) maintenance activities for all presses and support equipment.
- Communicate when presses and related support equipment aren’t performing correctly and provide recommendations to solve problems and assist with implementing solutions.
- Assist in the design of die sets and help troubleshoot and resolve process and quality issues related to all presses in the plant.
- Maintain stocking of spare tooling and critical spare parts for all presses and manufacturing equipment.
- Support the design, layout, and implementation of tooling and work-holding for new and existing products and components.
- Work closely with and assist the plant maintenance team with maintaining all plant equipment.
- Perform all machine shop operations such as, but not limited to, lathe work, drilling, grinding, milling, shaping and hand tool work.
- Assist with the repair and overhaul of factory equipment.
- Assist with and support the design and build of manufacturing systems and equipment as needed.
- Set up procedures to conform finished tooling to desired specifications.
- Develop specifications from general descriptions and draw sketches of parts or products.
- Assist the plant leadership team in the development of new tooling, new systems, and new production machines.
- Assist in the maintenance and up-keep of all machine shop equipment, as well as make recommendations to management for replacement or upgrade of shop equipment.
- Assist in the training of other personnel in the machine shop.
- Contributes in establishing safe use of machinery in the machine shop and throughout the plant.
- Operate all machine shop equipment to machine and fabricate assigned projects.
- Support the installation of new equipment throughout the plant: including learning operations, making process adjustments, and performing repairs.
- Assist the slitting department in set-up, repairing machinery as needed, and sharpening of slitter blades.
- Utilize proper use of all precision dimensional measurement devices such as, but not limited to micrometers, calipers, and other instruments as required.
- Produce machine parts that meet required dimensional tolerances.
- Communicate closely with personnel at tool rooms at other plants and vendors to acquire needed components that are out of the capability to produce internally with existing equipment.
- Utilize a working mechanical knowledge to determine the specific components needed such as gears, pulleys, belts, bushings, hardware, air lines, etc.  Look online and through catalogs to determine the source to purchase the necessary mechanical components.
- Additional duties could include welding, brazing, plumbing, and carpentry.
- All other duties as assigned

- Strong working knowledge of punch presses / stamping presses with particular expertise working with and maintaining die sets. Strong ability to set-up, adjust, repair, operate, and maintain plant equipment, especially punch / stamping presses.
- Able to read and interpret part drawings, assembly drawings, sketches, manuals, and specifications.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three to five years of related experience and/or training with equivalent of the completion of 8,000 hours machinist apprenticeship training to attain journeyman machinist papers as required by company or similar training as received elsewhere; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The person in this role must be very proficient with manual machining of tooling, die set components, and replacement repair parts.  The person in this role must be able to “think on their feet”, be creative with solutions to fix problems mechanically, and have a very strong mechanical background in a punch press manufacturing environment.  Experience with maintaining tooling and equipment in a high-volume manufacturing environment is required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write, and comprehend technical instructions, drawings, and manuals. Ability to read and write short correspondence and memos in English. Ability to analyze technical procedures. This position also requires the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABLILITY: Ability to define problems collecting data to establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Valid journeyman tool & die making, or related, and/or demonstrated equivalent combination of formal machining education and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch, or crawl; and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, heat, electrical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
