Machinist


As a Machinist at Colorado Springs Utilities, you will be responsible for the setup and operation of a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments in a job shop environment. In this job , you will have the opportunity to fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines by applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

The successful candidate will develop, design, and create new applications, ideas, relationships, systems, and products through manual and CNC machining, reading and interpreting blueprints, and interrupting and correcting programs on CNC machines.

Please note that this position will be filled at a 44.12/hr pay rate, with an increase to $46.33/ hr after a 6-month probationary period.

A day in the life of a Machinist may include:

  • Designing fixtures, tooling, or experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
  • Supporting metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties, and mathematics
  • Performing equipment setup and operating a variety of machinery and tool attachments
  • Creating drawings and sketches and meeting with customers to ensure the accuracy and feasibility of projects
  • Consulting with customers before, during, and after project completion to ensure proper selections are made and requirements are met

Who You Are:

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program OR equivalent combination of articulated formal training (in-shop) and documented journeyman-level experience. *A significant number of documented years working in a shop would provide journey level experience
  • Relevant and progressively responsible experience in machining and programming
  • Ability to study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances
  • Knowledge of a variety of metalworking machines, including EDMs, CNC Lathe Turning Centers, 4-axis CNC Mills, and Laser Cutting systems
  • Experience with MasterCam, Fusion360, and Radan
  • Certifications in Fusion360 CAD/CAM highly desired
  • Knowledge of G-CODE and M-CODES
  • Capabilities of programing and editing programs for the machine control
  • Experience using instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers to measure dimensions and tolerances
  • A degree in Machining Technology and Utility experience is valued

*Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license is required - This position requires operating a Colorado Springs Utilities vehicle
*This position works a 7:00am to 3:30pm, M-F

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
