General Purpose:

Lead all aspects of precision machining and fabrication operations for Armstrong Precision Manufacturing (APM). This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable execution of machine shop activities, including estimating, procurement, capital equipment maintenance, production planning, billing support, cost reporting, team development, and customer project execution from quotation through invoice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct daily machine shop operations, including CNC machining, manual machining, fabrication, assembly, and secondary processing.
  • Develop and manage production schedules that support customer delivery commitments and efficient workflow.
  • Monitor shop capacity, labor utilization, machine utilization, throughput, quality, delivery, and cost performance.
  • Establish and maintain manufacturing standards, procedures, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies and applicable regulations.
  • Review customer RFQs, drawings, specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Develop labor, material, outside processing, tooling, and equipment cost estimates; prepare quotations and support contract negotiations.
  • Analyze historical project data to improve estimate accuracy and profitability and identify value-engineering opportunities with engineering and customers.
  • Develop sourcing strategies for raw materials, tooling, consumables, and subcontract services.
  • Manage supplier relationships, pricing agreements, vendor performance, purchase orders, receiving activities, inventory levels, and min/max stocking strategies.
  • Ensure material availability supports production schedules and continuously evaluate alternate suppliers and cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs, equipment records, maintenance histories, repairs, rebuilds, and service contracts.
  • Develop annual capital expenditure plans and evaluate and justify machinery, tooling, automation, and technology investments.
  • Manage installation and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Ensure timely and accurate project invoicing by reviewing completed work orders and verifying labor, material, subcontractor, and miscellaneous charges.
  • Review customer billing and payment requirements, support accounts receivable collection efforts as needed, and assist with month-end project closeout.
  • Develop and maintain job-cost reports; track estimated versus actual costs; analyze labor efficiency, material utilization, machine utilization, and profitability.
  • Prepare monthly operational and financial performance reports; identify margin improvement opportunities and corrective actions; support budgeting and forecasting.
  • Monitor KPIs including gross margin, on-time delivery, labor efficiency, machine utilization, inventory turns, quote win rate, and safety performance.
  • Lead and mentor machinists, programmers, maintenance personnel, and support staff.
  • Conduct performance reviews and development planning; support recruiting, hiring, onboarding, workforce planning, cross-training, and skills development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Effectively communicate and project the core values of McCarl's and maintain effective interpersonal communications at all levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager/supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Business, Operations Management, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of technical training and industry experience will be considered.
  • 10+ years of manufacturing or machine shop experience, including 5+ years of leadership experience in a machining, fabrication, or manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with CNC machining operations, estimating and quoting, procurement and vendor management, maintenance management, job costing, financial reporting, and production scheduling.
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Working knowledge of CNC machining processes, tooling, cost accounting, material procurement, inventory control, and equipment maintenance planning.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate effectively, build customer and supplier relationships, and make sound operational and financial decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and manufacturing business systems.
  • Ability to safely visit operating and customer sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a job shop or high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experience serving industrial, steel, energy, infrastructure, defense, or OEM customers.
  • Familiarity with welding, fabrication, and assembly processes.
  • Experience implementing ERP or manufacturing execution systems (MES).
