Job Description

M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Located in Hong Kong’s WestK, we are one of the leading museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world. The museum reflects our unique time and place, building on Hong Kong’s historic balance of the local and the international to define a distinctive and innovative voice for Asia’s twenty-first century.

The M+ Internship Programme is a unique opportunity for those who are interested in developing a career in the museum field. You will work closely with the M+ team full time for a period of one year, gaining both practical and theoretical training. This intake will take place from September 2026 to August 2027

The Learning and Interpretation Internship provides hands-on training for potential museum professionals who are interested in gaining curatorial experience on museum education. Working under the supervision of one of our curators as their mentor, the interns will assist on upcoming learning programmes and events on various aspects, including Volunteer Guides programme, exhibition interpretation and audience research.

You will be able to:

  • explore topics of research such as guided tour experience, gallery evaluation, museum interpretation strategy and pedagogy;
  • support M+ Volunteer Guides programme by developing and coordinating training sessions, guided service strategic plans, exhibition tour notes and study resources;
  • design and conduct evaluation exercise for interpretive tools and different gallery-based learning outlets by observing audience behaviour and analysing their usage data;
  • assist the planning and execution of innovative learning programmes and interpretive resources for different audience groups;
  • collaborate with curators in the Learning and Interpretation team and support the operation of a range of educational events; and
  • Performing any other duties from time to time as reasonably assigned by M+.

You need to:

  • possess a recognised university degree or equivalent qualification in cultural studies, art and humanities, media and communication, sociology, social work, cultural management or a related subject;
  • have strong interest in visual culture education and museum learning;
  • demonstrate empathy, openness, and patience, fostering a positive experience for volunteers from diverse backgrounds;
  • have excellent command of spoken and written English, Cantonese and Mandarin;
  • have strong communication and organizational skills;
  • be open-minded to learning new things and collaborating with others; and
  • be occasionally work weekends, evenings and public holidays if programmes or training are arranged.

Candidates with relevant working experience in coordinating volunteer projects in non-profit organisations is preferred but not required. Participation in audience research projects is a plus.

About West Kowloon Cultural District Authority

Stretching across 40 hectares of reclaimed land, WestK is one of the largest cultural projects in the world, blending art, education and open space.

Its vision is to create a vibrant cultural quarter for Hong Kong where the local arts scene can interact, develop and collaborate. Providing 23 hectares of public open space with two kilometres of vibrant harbour-front promenade it will also include a variety of arts and cultural facilities that will produce and host world-class exhibitions, performances and arts and cultural events.

A Development Plan for the District, based on well-received Foster + Partner’s Conceptual Plan, was approved by the Chief Executive-in-Council in January 2013. Overlooking the magnificent Victoria Harbour, the District will begin to take shape over the next decade.

By developing this sizable project in phases we can start to bring the district to life. The Xiqu Centre, Freespace, Art Park, M+, Hong Kong Palace Museum and Lyric Theatre Complex, will be developed as a first batch of facilities aiming for opening to the public.
