Job Description
Job Summary
Toshiba International Corporation is seeking an Applications Engineering Intern, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to support the Applications Engineering team within the Motors & Drives business. This internship provides an opportunity for an engineering student to gain practical experience applying electrical engineering concepts to industrial motor and variable frequency drive applications.
The intern will work alongside Applications Engineers and other technical and commercial team members to learn how customer operating requirements are translated into appropriate product and application solutions. The role will provide exposure to VFD technology, electric motors, industrial applications, customer specifications, technical documentation, and the commercial processes that support engineered product solutions.
Toshiba’s existing Applications Engineer role includes evaluating customer issues and requirements, applying products, reviewing engineering specifications, supporting quotations, preparing technical materials, and helping resolve technical and commercial questions throughout the business cycle.
Responsibilities
- Assist Applications Engineers with the review of customer specifications, application requirements, and technical documentation.
- Support the selection and application of Variable Frequency Drives for industrial motor applications.
- Assist with gathering and evaluating application information such as motor characteristics, voltage, horsepower, load requirements, operating conditions, and customer specifications.
- Help prepare technical information and documentation used to support customer proposals and quotations.
- Assist with reviewing product configurations to determine alignment with customer and application requirements.
- Work with Applications Engineering, Sales, Product Management, and other engineering groups to help address technical questions and customer requirements.
- Support the development and maintenance of product documentation, application notes, presentations, and other technical materials.
- Participate in technical discussions to gain an understanding of VFD operation, electric motor control, power electronics, and industrial applications.
- Assist with researching technical requirements, product capabilities, industry standards, and application considerations.
- Support engineering projects involving product applications, documentation, data analysis, and process improvement.
- Gain exposure to the technical and commercial aspects of the Applications Engineering process, from initial customer requirements through product selection and proposal support.
- Perform other engineering projects and assignments as needed.
These responsibilities intentionally mirror elements of Toshiba's established Applications Engineering function, particularly product application, specification review, quotation support, technical presentations, and product documentation.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Completed or currently completing coursework related to electrical circuits, electronics, electric machines, power systems, controls, or power electronics.
- Basic understanding of AC electrical systems and electrical engineering principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical information, specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn technical products and applications.
Electrical Engineering is the most appropriate degree target here. Toshiba's existing Associate Applications Engineer description specifically calls for a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, while the company's drive-design work involves low- and medium-voltage adjustable speed drives, power electronics, control/interface circuits, schematics, testing, and application support.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or project experience involving power electronics, electric motors, motor controls, or Variable Frequency Drives.
- Familiarity with three-phase AC power and induction motors.
- Exposure to control systems, PLCs, or industrial automation.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink or similar engineering analysis tools.
- Interest in industrial power electronics, motor control, applications engineering, or technical sales.
- Previous engineering internship, laboratory, design project, or hands-on technical experience.
Internship Learning Opportunities
During the internship, the student will have the opportunity to develop practical knowledge in areas including:
- Variable Frequency Drive fundamentals and applications
- AC motors and motor-control concepts
- Industrial power and automation applications
- Reading and interpreting customer engineering specifications
- Translating operating requirements into product/application requirements
- Technical product selection
- Engineering quotation and proposal support
- Customer-focused technical problem solving
- Cross-functional collaboration between engineering, product management, and sales
- Technical documentation and presentation development
This customer-to-solution aspect is important for the role. Toshiba's current Applications Engineer description positions the function at the intersection of technical product knowledge and customer needs, including product application, specification review, quotations, presentations, and technical support.
