Schedule: Part-Time. Three days per week.
Job Goal: To provide developmentally appropriate personal-social, academic, and career counseling to nonpublic elementary and secondary school students and consultation with various stakeholders in the nonpublic school setting.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Promote communication among students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other educational specialists when appropriate.
2. Assist nonpublic school staff and students in establishing a positive educational environment.
3. Establish a referral system within the school in order to provide individual and/or small group counseling services.
4. Review student records and conduct classroom observations as needed.
5. Help students understand the role of the school counselor in the school setting.
6. Provide developmental/preventive counseling when needed.
7. Assist nonpublic school staff in assessing needs of immediate and severe student concerns.
8. Participate on the school's Student Support Team and/or Student Assistance Team.
9. Interpret test results for students, parents, faculty, and administrators within the limits of confidentiality.
10. Assist in the adaptation of academic instruction to meet individual student needs as necessary.
11. Confer with parents in implementing and coordinating strategies designed to meet the individual student needs.
12. Become familiar with school policy regarding academic standards.
13. Provide suggestions to parents and students to improve academic performance.
14. Become knowledgeable of requirements for recommending educational screening and assessment.
15. Assist students in planning career and college goals if appropriate.
16. Provide information to students and parents regarding cooperative and vocational educational programs if appropriate.
17. Make referrals to appropriate agencies and/or private practitioners when appropriate.
18. Serve as a liaison between outside services and the school as needed.
19. Attend Act 89 staff and program meetings as scheduled by the supervisor, except when excused.
20. Utilize current technology for instruction and record management.
21. Maintain office to provide an appropriate student learning environment.
22. Maintain positive relationships with school personnel and CAIU colleagues to enhance the Act 89 program.
23. Participate in any CAIU or cross-functional teams as needed.
24. Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by the program supervisor his/her designee.
25. Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director or his/her designee.

Qualifications
1. Master’s Degree in Elementary and/or Secondary School Counseling required.
2. Active, valid PA State Certification in Elementary and Secondary School Counseling.
3. School Counseling or Community Based Counseling experience preferred.
4. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
5. Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
6. Proficient to excellent computer and technology skills.

The Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) is one of 29 educational services agencies located throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Created in 1971 by an Act of PA legislature, IUs are intended to support and provide services to the schools and districts in the IU’s territory or “footprint.” The CAIU serves Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and northern York counties, which includes Harrisburg; hence the name “Capital Area.”
