Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s
- Belt Splicing and Repair Execution
- Perform expert splicing of various types of conveyor belts, including steel cord and fabric-reinforced belts, utilizing both hot vulcanization and cold bonding techniques.
- Execute precise mechanical splices (e.g., fastener installation) for temporary repairs or where vulcanization is not feasible, ensuring optimal tension and tracking.
- Conduct emergency and planned repairs on damaged belt sections, including patching, edge repairs, and gouge filling to extend belt life.
- Manage the rigging, cutting, removal, and installation of new and old conveyor belts safely and efficiently.
1.5. Lead and execute hot and cold conveyor belt splices and repairs.
- Supervise splicing teams and ensure quality control.
- Inspect, test, and certify completed splices.
- Provide technical advice on belt selection and maintenance.
- Train splicing personnel on safe and effective techniques.
- Maintain records of splicing operations and press calibrations.
- Preventative Maintenance and Inspection
- Carry out routine and detailed inspections of all conveyor belts and associated components (e.g., pulleys, idlers, scrapers, skirt boards) to proactively identify wear, damage, and potential failure points.
- Measure and monitor belt wear, damage progression, and splice integrity to schedule preventative maintenance effectively.
- Ensure belt tracking is accurate to prevent damage to the belt and conveyor structure.
- Rubber Lining and Component Maintenance
- Perform rubber lining and cold bonding for various fixed plant components to prevent corrosion and abrasion, including chutes, hoppers, launders, and pulley lagging (ceramic and rubber).
- Inspect and maintain belt cleaners, scrapers, and tracking equipment, adjusting, or replacing parts as needed.
- Safety, Documentation, and Housekeeping
- Strictly adhere to all Lockout/Tagout/Tryout (LOTO) procedures before commencing any work.
- Conduct pre-job risk assessments (JHA/JSA) for all tasks, especially non-routine work and working at height or in confined spaces.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all splicing, repair, and maintenance work performed, including materials used, work duration, and post-repair inspection results.
Ensure the splicing workshop and job sites are kept clean, organized, and free of hazards (high standard of housekeeping).
Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge
- Essential
- Advanced Belt Splicing Certification (Level 2 or 3).
- 5+ years’ experience in mining or heavy industrial environment.
- Knowledge of various belt types, compounds, and vulcanizing parameters.
- High School Diploma or equivalent technical qualification
- Desirable
- Recognized Trade Test Certificate (e.g., Fitter, Boilermaker, Mechanical) or a relevant Certification in Polymer Processing/Conveyor Maintenance.
Hands-on experience as a Belt Splicer/Vulcanizer, preferably within a heavy industrial, mining, or large-scale material handling environment (e.g., iron ore, coal, or port operations).

- Profound understanding of conveyor belt mechanics, including tensioning systems, belt sag, and tracking.
- Mechanical and Diagnostic Aptitude
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and fault-finding skills to diagnose the root cause of belt failures, tracking issues, and component damage.
- Competency in basic rigging and slinging techniques for safe lifting and positioning of heavy belt sections and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and splicing procedures.
- Safety and Compliance Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of mining and industrial safety regulations (e.g., MSHA, OSHA, or equivalent high-standard local regulations).
- Proven ability to conduct thorough risk assessments and adhere strictly to all required isolation and permitting procedures (LOTO/PTW).
- Commitment to maintaining a "Zero Harm" safety culture.

- Ability to complete accurate work reports, logbook entries, and material consumption records.
Clear and effective verbal communication to report progress, issues, and safety observations to the Line Manager and shift teams.

Primarily involves working in a heavy industrial port and ore handling environment, which includes exposure to noise, dust, high temperatures, humidity, and all-weather conditions. Work may take place at elevated heights (conveyor gantries) and occasionally in confined spaces (transfer points).
