Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and implement midwifery care plans and maintain medical records.
  • Assesses and diagnoses pregnancies
  • Gives prenatal care to all pregnant women, including malaria prophylaxis and tetanus immunization
  • Identifies mothers at risk and makes the necessary referrals in consultation with the MD.
  • Conducts and manages all normal deliveries in the clinic setting, giving supportive care to the mother.
  • Assesses the newborn and make referrals if necessary.
  • Gives safe and clean care to the mother and newborn during delivery and immediately afterwards (post-natal).
  • Advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention measures.
  • Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients’ responses and conditions.
  • Prescribes or recommend drugs, medical devices, or other forms of treatment, such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.
  • Directs and coordinates infection control programs, advising and consulting with specified personnel about necessary precautions.

Qualification/Experience

  • Must have completed four years of training in the specific fields of study from a recognized nursing & midwifery school.
  • A combined bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) plus Certificate in midwifery, or a combined bachelor’s degree in midwifery (BSM) plus bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) are requirements.
  • Hold a current license from the Liberian Board of Nursing & Midwifery (LBNM) with CPD credits.
  • Active registered member of their specific professional association.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of practice in Liberia, with working experience in Grand Bassa as an advantage.

Core Competencies / Skills / Knowledge

  • Monitor the labor process and determine how well it progresses.
  • Provides care in the post-delivery (post-natal care) process and continue to monitor the condition of the mother to ensure she does not have any complications such as a possible haemorrhage after delivery.
  • Instructs individuals, families, and other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention and childbirth, and develop health improvement programs.
  • Directs and coordinates infection control programs, advising and consulting with specified personnel about necessary precautions.
  • Handles obstetrical complications/emergencies as they arise and make timely referrals, in consultation with the MD.
  • Guides and supervise less skilled midwives, health care personnel, or a particular unit during assigned shift.
  • Ensure patients are prepared for specific examinations and/or surgical procedures.
  • Support all midwifery personnel in the unit to achieve the objectives of the Unit/AML hospital.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethics and ability to work within a team environment.
  • Ability to work on day and night shift rosters.
  • Ability to implement instructions related to AML 10 Golden Rules on Health & Safety
