Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s

Mooring and Unmooring Operations:

  • Handle mooring ropes, wires, and other related equipment to secure vessels during berth and departure.
  • Operate winches, capstans, and other mooring devices as required.
  • Ensure lines are correctly positioned on bollards or other securing points to maintain vessel stability.
  • Follow all safety protocols during operations, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify potential hazards during operations and report them to supervisors promptly.
  • Securing vessels to the dock using ropes, chains, or other equipment to prevent movement.
  • Safely releasing vessels from their moored position when they are ready to depart. Coordinating with ship crews and port authorities to ensure smooth operations and safety protocols.
  • Implement safety measures to protect personnel and equipment during mooring operations.
  • Monitor environmental conditions (tides, weather, and oil spillage) that may affect mooring safety.
  • Support the cleaning of ore spillage on vessel deck
  • Performs other tasks as may be required by the supervisor.

Equipment Handling and Maintenance:

  • Inspect mooring equipment for wear or damage and report any defects for maintenance or replacement.
  • Assist in routine cleaning and maintenance of mooring facilities and equipment.
  • Managing and maintaining mooring equipment such as fenders, lines, winches, and bollards.
  • Ensure the proper storage and handling of ropes and other gear to avoid damage or operational delays.
  • Participate in safety drills and training sessions to stay updated on emergency procedures.

Communication:

  • Coordinate with vessel crew, pilots, and port authorities during operations to ensure alignment and safety.
  • Use radios or other communication tools effectively to relay operational instructions.
  • Maintain records of mooring operations as required by port or company policies.
  • Report incidents or irregularities immediately to the Mooring Supervisor.

Qualifications / Experience

  • Ability to read and write is essential. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, with additional certifications in port operations or logistics considered an advantage.
  • A minimum of 2–5 years of hands-on experience in port operations and mooring activities is required.
  • Prior experience in mooring operations or a similar maritime role is preferred.

  • Strong physical stamina and ability to work in challenging weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of mooring techniques and equipment handling.
  • Effective communication skills and teamwork ability.
  • Familiarity with safety standards in marine or port operations.

  • Port environments may also undergo changes, requiring the ability to adapt training programs accordingly.

Working Conditions

  • Work is predominantly performed outdoors in a port or terminal environment.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, wind, and humidity.
  • High levels of noise from cranes, trucks, ships, and other heavy machinery.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as ear protection may be required.
  • Proximity to moving machinery, including cranes, forklifts, and container handlers.
  • A constant need to remain vigilant to avoid accidents or injuries.

Health and Safety

1.1. Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, standards, and procedures.

1.2. Participate in health, safety and environment training programs to understand potential hazards, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.

1.3. Report any health, safety and environmental concerns, incidents, or near misses promptly to the designated supervisor or safety officer.

1.4. Assist in identifying workplace hazards and participate in risk assessments to minimize risks to personal health and safety.

1.5. Wear appropriate PPE as required for specific tasks or environments and ensure that it is maintained and used correctly.

1.6. Be familiar with emergency response procedures, including evacuation routes, assembly points, and first aid protocols.

1.7. Follow established safe work practices and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, or illnesses.

1.8. Operate machinery, tools, and equipment safely, following manufacturer's instructions and the AML safety guidelines.

1.9. Maintain a clean and orderly workspace to reduce hazards and prevent accidents.

1.9.1. Promote a culture of health and safety awareness among coworkers by encouraging safe behaviors and reporting unsafe conditions.

1.9.2. Participate in health and safety committees or meetings as required, providing input and suggestions for improving workplace safety.

1.9.3. Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities as required by company policy and regulations.

Environment

1.1. Oversee and monitor the environmental performance of your department's functions, ensuring high levels of awareness and compliance with company environmental policies and relevant environmental laws.

1.2. Regularly review environmental performance metrics and indicators to track progress, identify trends, and address areas for improvement.

1.3. Ensure all environmental incidents are reported promptly and investigated thoroughly in line with company policies and legal requirements.

1.4. Uphold a culture of environmental responsibility and compliance within the organization by setting clear expectations for incident reporting and response at all levels.

1.5. Collaborate with the Environment team to identify opportunities for environmental improvement and develop strategic programs to enhance sustainability practices.
