Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s
1. Equipment Operation and Maintenance
1.1. Operate the compactor efficiently to achieve desired compaction standards on soil, gravel, or other materials.
1.2. Conduct pre-operation checks to ensure the compactor is in good working condition, including.
1.3. Inspecting fluids, tires, and safety equipment.
1.4. Perform basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting the compactor as needed.
2. Safety and Compliance
2.1. Follow all safety protocols and always use personal protective equipment (PPE).
2.2. Ensure the compaction area is clear of hazards and follow site safety guidelines.
2.3. Report any unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, or accidents immediately to the supervisor.
3. Quality Control and Compaction Standards
3.1. Ensure that the compaction meets project specifications, including achieving proper compaction depth and 3.2. material density.
3.2. Monitor compaction progress and adjust settings or operations to meet project requirements.
3.3. Conduct regular checks to confirm the compaction is uniform and as per design.
4. Documentation and Reporting
4.1. Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, fuel consumption, and any maintenance or repairs conducted.
4.2. Submit daily reports on work completed, including any challenges faced during operations.
4.3. Document compaction test results and site conditions, providing updates to supervisors as needed.
5. Team Collaboration and Communication
5.1. Communicate effectively with supervisors and other team members to coordinate work tasks and ensure smooth operation.
5.2. Participate in team meetings and safety briefings as required.
5.3. Assist with training new operators or crew members when needed.
Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge
High School diploma or equivalent; certification in heavy equipment operation is preferred.
Valid driver’s license (specialized license may be required depending on the equipment and location).
Minimum of 2 years’ experience operating compactors or other heavy construction equipment.
Experience in construction, mining, or roadwork environments is preferred.
Strong understanding of compaction techniques, soil types, and material behaviour.
Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations for operating heavy machinery.

Working Conditions
The role is performed primarily outdoors in construction or mining sites, often exposed to varying weather
conditions such as heat, dust, and rain.
Work is typically conducted on uneven terrain and may involve long hours operating machinery.
The operator must adhere to strict safety standards, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
May require shift work, including nights, weekends, and extended hours depending on project deadlines and site
conditions.
Health and Safety
1.1. Always follow site-specific safety guidelines, including maintaining a safe distance from other workers and vehicles while operating the compactor.
1.2. Wear the required PPE, such as helmets, safety boots, AML uniforms, hearing protection, and gloves, to minimize exposure to hazards.
1.3. Conduct regular pre-operational inspections of the compactor to ensure all safety features (e.g., brakes, lights, and alarms) are functioning properly before use.
1.4. Operate the compactor in a safe manner, always ensuring stability and control to avoid accidents or rollovers.
1.5. Immediately report any safety hazards, near misses, equipment malfunctions, or unsafe conditions to the supervisor or safety officer.
1.6. Remain vigilant to site conditions (e.g., uneven ground, proximity to other heavy equipment) and adjust operation to minimize risks to self and others.
1.7. Be familiar with emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and first-aid measures, in case of accidents or equipment failure.
1.8. Ensure proper lock-out/tag-out procedures are followed during maintenance or repair work to prevent accidental machine start-up.
Environment
1.1. Operate the compactor to reduce excessive soil compaction and prevent erosion or environmental damage.
1.2. Ensure the compactor is properly maintained to minimize dust, emissions, and fuel consumption, adhering to
environmental standards.
1.3. Avoid working near sensitive ecosystems, water bodies, or protected areas, and report any environmental incidents immediately.
