Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s:

Daily Operations Management

  • Oversee and coordinate the daily operations of rail services, including train scheduling, dispatching, and on-time performance.
  • Monitor real-time train movements and make operational adjustments as necessary to address delays, incidents, or disruptions.
  • Ensure the smooth execution of service plans, including regular passenger services, freight operations, and special services.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of operational staff, including train crews, dispatchers, and control center personnel.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and implement training programs to enhance team skills and knowledge.
  • Address staffing needs, including scheduling, shift planning, and resource allocation to meet operational demands.

Incident Management

  • Lead the response to operational incidents, including derailments, delays, and emergencies, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders, including passengers, authorities, and internal departments, during incidents.
  • Prepare and oversee the implementation of contingency plans to minimize service disruptions.

Quality Control

  • Conduct regular inspections and quality control checks of operational activities in the Buchanan section.
  • Ensure operational protocol meet established standards and regulatory requirements.

Resource Management

  • Manage operational resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials, to ensure effective support for daily operations.
  • Oversee budgeting and cost control for operational activities, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Coordinate with procurement to ensure the availability of necessary supplies and equipment.

Coordination and Communication

  • Liaise with other departments, including maintenance, engineering, and customer service, to ensure coordinated and efficient operations.
  • Facilitate clear communication channels between the control center, field staff, and management.
  • Represent the operations team in meetings with senior management and external partners

Reporting and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of operational activities, incidents, and performance metrics.
  • Prepare regular reports on operational performance, safety, and compliance for senior management.
  • Utilize operational management software and tools to track and analyse data, ensuring informed decision-making.

Continuous Improvement

  • Analyse operational data and performance metrics to identify areas for improvement in efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Implement best practices and lead initiatives aimed at enhancing operational performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and innovations, integrating relevant advancements into operational practices.

Safety Compliance

  • Ensure that all operational activities comply with safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments, and implement corrective actions where necessary.
  • Lead safety briefings and promote a strong culture of safety among all operational staff.

Qualifications / Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with rail operational management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience: Strong knowledge of rail shunting operations, safety regulations, and industry standards. Minimum 5 years of rail operations experience.
