Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s

Locomotive Diagnostics and Repair

  • Perform advanced diagnostics on locomotive systems: engine, traction motors, control circuits, brakes, and onboard software.
  • Conduct periodic overhauls and critical repairs on powertrains, air compressors, and fuel systems.
  • Use OEM software tools (e.g. GE Trip Optimizer, EMD EM2000) for real-time data logging and troubleshooting.

KPI: Mean Time to Repair (MTTR):

KPI: Locomotive Reliability Score (monthly availability %):

Preventive Maintenance

  • Execute scheduled preventive maintenance (PMs) in line with OEM and AML standards.
  • Maintain records for consumables, parts replaced, and service intervals.

    KPI: PM Compliance Rate (% on-time completion):

    KPI: Repeat Failure Rate (same-unit, same-fault within 30 days):

Safety, Compliance & Documentation

  • Enforce safety lockout/tagout procedures when working on live systems.
  • Ensure all repairs meet ISO and AML technical quality standards.
  • Document all maintenance work, including faults found, corrective actions, and component changes.

KPI: Zero safety violations –

KPI: 100% compliance with documentation standards

Team Leadership and Support

  • Mentor junior locomotive technicians and apprentices.
  • Lead small teams during complex overhauls or line-side recovery operations.
  • Provide technical input into procurement of tools, spares, and parts.

Operational Readiness and Emergency Response

  • Support dispatch teams with readiness status of each locomotive consist.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns along the line or in remote terminals.
  • Collaborate with rail operations to minimize locomotive-related train delays.

Innovation and Reliability Engineering

  • Stay abreast of industry best practices, fuel efficiency enhancements, and new diagnostic tools.
  • Propose and pilot modifications that improve fleet performance or reduce lifecycle costs.

Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge

  • Education: Technical diploma or degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or equivalent certification in Diesel-Electric Locomotive Maintenance.
  • Experience:

    ➢ Minimum 5 years working on heavy-duty locomotives (e.g. GE Dash 9, ES44AC, EMD SD70 series).

    ➢ Strong understanding of railway brake systems, power electronics, and locomotive communication protocols.

  • Technical Expertise:

    ➢ Advanced Fault Diagnosis (engine codes, traction power, sensors, etc.).

    ➢ Technical Documentation & Reporting.

    ➢ Strong Computer Skills (locomotive control systems, work order platforms)

    ➢ Capacity to perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting heavy materials, bending, and working in harsh weather conditions.

  • Problem-Solving:

    ➢ Ability to identify loco defects quickly and implement effective solutions.

    ➢ High level of precision in identifying, measuring and maintaining loco defects to ensure safety and functionality.
