Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s

Inspection of Existing Sub-Structure and other Civil Assets

  • Inspect existing embankments, cuttings, slopes, and formation layers for signs of erosion, settlement, or instability.
  • Assess the condition of existing foundations, abutments, piers, trusses and components, retaining walls, culverts and drainage structures.
  • Identify defects such as cracks, spalling, water ingress, voids, scour, or structural delamination/deterioration.
  • Monitor track bed formation for deformation, fouling, or drainage issues that could affect track geometry.

Monitoring and Risk Management

  • Conduct routine and special inspections after heavy rainfall, flooding or seismic activity.
  • Monitor ground movement, settlement, or slope failures that may threaten the track formation.
  • Monitor embankments, cuttings, slopes, and retaining structures for signs of instability or erosion.
  • Identify and report urgent safety hazards requiring immediate intervention to prevent occurrence.
  • Support the engineering team in implementing mitigation measures such as temporary shoring, drainage improvements or slope stabilizations.

Oversight of Sub-Structure Maintenance and Repair Works

  • Inspect and verify repair works on sub-structure elements, including concrete repairs, grouting, underpinning, culvert and drainage rehabilitation.
  • Work with team in the maintenance and rehabilitation of culverts including apron, headwalls and wing walls repair or construction.
  • Ensure maintenance activities follow railway authority standards and approved methods.
  • Monitor contractors performing works near live tracks to ensure safe working distances and protection measures are maintained.
  • Ensure that the railway drainage systems including side or parallel drains, parallel intercepting or catch drains, cross drains are properly maintained to prevent or control erosion along fills and around culverts, and to limit or prevent mudslide along cuts or embankment.

Safety and Railway Operations Coordination

  • Ensure all activities comply with railway safety protocols, including track access permits and possession rules.
  • Coordinate with railway operations team (mainly Railway Traffic Control) to schedule inspections and works during safe windows.
  • Verify that workers follow safe systems of work, including lookout arrangements, isolation procedures, and equipment restrictions near tracks.

Quality Assurance Compliance

  • Review and verify materials used for repairs (e.g., concrete, aggregates, grouts) meet approved specifications.
  • Witness field test such as Non-Destructive Test, Civil Engineering Test, Simple Settlement checks and drainage performance checks.
  • Ensure all works comply with railway engineering standards, local regulations, and project requirements.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Prepare inspection reports, defect logs, and photographic records of existing conditions.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, condition assessments, and maintenance histories for civil assets.
  • Maintain updated asset condition records for long-term maintenance planning.
  • Report urgent defects immediately to civil engineer or sub-structure superintendent, and Railway Traffic Control Room.
  • Document as-built conditions after repair or rehabilitation works.

Coordination and Technical Support

  • Work closely with civil engineers, sub-structure maintenance teams, and railway authorities to ensure that the general production target is met without sub-structural hindrance.
  • Review method statements and repair proposals for works affecting existing sub-structures.
  • Provide technical import during planning of maintenance or upgrade works to avoid damaging existing assets.

Environmental and Drainage Oversight

  • Inspect and maintain existing drainage systems to prevent water accumulation and track bed deterioration.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental requirements, especially near water courses, or protected areas.
  • Monitor vegetation, erosion, and water flow patterns that may affect sub-structure stability.
  • Work with team to ensure drainage cleaning, desilting, repair, and reinstatement activities along the railway corridor.
  • Identify drainage deficiencies affecting track stability and recommend corrective technical solutions.

Access Roads, Bridges and Culverts

  • Inspect Access roads bridges to ensure safe access to railway track for maintenance teams.
  • Conduct routine and special inspections of bridges, culverts, and civil structures along the access road.
  • Monitor minor to medium rehabilitation works including concrete repairs, masonry works, and structural strengthening.
  • Support bridge load assessments and condition reporting as required.

Heath Safety and Environment Compliance

  • Enforce AML safety procedures during field works, including work near live railway tracks.
  • Participate risk assessments, toolbox talks, and site safety inspections.
  • Ensure sub-structural works comply with technical standards, environmental regulations, and railway safety requirements.
  • Promptly report and investigate incidents, near misses, or infrastructure failures.
  • Adhere to the ten golden rules, written company policies, SOPs and other safety procedures to enhance a safe working environment.

Qualifications / Experience / Technical Knowledge

Education

  • High School Diploma with WAEC or WASSCE Certification
  • Associate degree in civil engineering or related discipline could be an added advantage.


    Experience

  • Minimum 3–4 years field experience in civil infrastructure inspection and maintenance, preferably along the railway, or within heavy industrial environments.
  • Proven experience in drainage systems, culverts, bridges, and earthworks maintenance.
  • Field based experience working along linear infrastructure corridors.

    Technical Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of railway substructure principles, culverts and drainage design.
  • Ability to prepare and submit inspection reports.
  • Knowledge of various methods of culvert repair, apron, wing walls and headwalls construction.
  • Knowledge of concrete, masonry, earthworks, and erosion control techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and inspection reports.

Core Competencies / Skills

  • Strong on field experience in construction and maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of trenchless technological approaches used for the rehabilitation of culverts.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures associated with working at height and over a body of water.
