Job Description

TITLE: Long-Term Substitute, 6th Grade Science (Fall Semester 2026) - King Middle School

Portland Public Schools seeks a long-term substitute science teacher to join our team for the fall semester. Under direction of the school principal, plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure Success for Every Student. Supervises students in a variety of school related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community. Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of techniques for integrating curriculum and effective instructional practices
  • Understanding of the teaching/learning process
  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
  • Ability to infuse technology into curriculum
  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Maine State Teacher Certificate with one of the following (more info):
    • Endorsement 020 (General Elementary, K-6 or K-8)
    • Endorsement 340 (General Science, 5-8)
  • Maine State CHRC authorization (more info) **
    • **if you already have an active teacher certification, you do not need a separate CHRC as this clearance is tied to your teacher certification

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

  • Schedule: School Year, Full Time (1.0 FTE)
  • Assignment: Temporary (approx dates of coverag = 09/22/2026 to 01/07/2026
  • Wage: $36.43 per hour (this is the 25-26 rate; 26-27 rate will be higher; certification required for this rate)
