Salary: $31.48 per hour / $251.84 full day

POSITION SUMMARY

The Teacher/Consultant for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) provides specialized instruction, consultation, assessment, and support to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing across Paul Bunyan Education Cooperative member districts. The position supports students in developing language, communication, academic, and functional skills based on their individual needs and educational goals.

The DHH Teacher/Consultant collaborates with students, families, classroom teachers, special education staff, audiologists, speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, and other educational professionals to ensure appropriate educational access and services. Responsibilities include providing direct and individualized instruction, supporting the effective use of amplification and communication systems, adapting curriculum and instructional materials, conducting assessments, participating in IEP development and meetings, and completing required special education documentation and due process requirements.

The position also serves as a consultant and resource to educational teams and families, helping to promote effective communication and language development across school and home environments. The DHH Teacher/Consultant may provide services across multiple school buildings and districts and is expected to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary educational setting to support the unique learning needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Provides instruction for the DHH students in the areas of language, communication skills and knowledge appropriate to their age, maturity and ability.
• Employs amplification aids to make use of student's residual hearing in conjunction with the Audiologist.
• Makes periodic checks of hearing aids and auditory trainers. Reports conditions needing correction to the parents and the audiologist.
• Instructs students in development of communication skills on an individual basis.
• Works closely with the classroom teacher providing interpreting, tutoring and language therapy for those students who benefit from integration in the regular classroom.
• Works closely with parents of DHH children to help them continue the language learning process outside of school hours.
• Counsels individual students on performance, behavior, and progress.
• Confers as needed with the program coordinator, teacher on special assignment, audiologist, speech therapist, psychologist, guidance counselors, adaptive physical education specialist and school nurse on the progress of the child.
• Administers both standardized and non-standardized individual and group achievement tests; prepares written assessment reports to be presented at Individual Education Plan meetings.
• Attends IEP meetings
• Completes special education due process and reports within required timelines
• Development and adaptation of curriculum and materials suitable to the unique learning needs of the DHH students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Teaching license for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Birth to 22
• Master of Education in Deaf Education
• Fluent ASL user

Work Environment:

Employees in this position will be required to work indoors and outdoors in an educational environment and may make home visits. Employees may come in direct contact with students, parents, school district staff, outside agency staff, the public, pets or physical objects that may require a quick response or moving and lifting.
