Position Summary
The Logistics and Trade Compliance Specialist will be responsible for supporting and managing import compliance activities for freight entering Mexico. This role will ensure adherence to Mexican customs regulations, import/export laws, trade agreements, and internal company policies while supporting efficient cross-border logistics operations.
The position will work closely with customs brokers, freight forwarders, carriers, procurement teams, logistics providers, and government agencies to ensure compliant and timely importation of goods into Mexico. This role requires strong knowledge of Mexico customs regulations, import documentation, tariff classifications, and international trade compliance practices.
Key Responsibilities
Import Compliance & Customs Management
• Manage and oversee import compliance activities for shipments entering Mexico.
• Ensure compliance with Mexican customs laws, regulations, and trade requirements.
• Coordinate with customs brokers to facilitate timely and compliant customs clearance.
• Review and validate import documentation including: Commercial invoices, packing lists, Certificates of origin, Pedimentos, HS/HTS tariff classifications and Import permits and licenses
• Ensure accurate product classification and customs valuation.
• Support compliance with IMMEX, USMCA, and other applicable trade programs where applicable.
• Monitor import entries for accuracy and resolve customs discrepancies or holds.
Regulatory Compliance
• Maintain current knowledge of Mexico customs regulations and international trade requirements.
• Support internal audits and customs compliance reviews.
• Assist with customs inquiries, investigations, and regulatory communications.
• Ensure compliance with restricted party screening and denied party requirements.
• Maintain documentation and records in accordance with regulatory retention requirements.
• Monitor and support compliance with evolving Mexico customs regulations, IMMEX program requirements, and foreign trade enforcement initiatives.
• Support company readiness for regulatory changes impacting customs valuation, origin documentation, temporary imports, and trade reporting obligations.
• Coordinate internal reviews and corrective actions related to customs compliance risk areas identified through audits or regulatory updates.
• Assist with implementation of new Mexican customs digitalization and electronic reporting requirements.
Logistics & Cross-Border Operations
• Collaborate with logistics and transportation teams to support efficient cross-border freight movement.
• Monitor shipment status and proactively resolve customs clearance issues.
• Support carrier and freight forwarder coordination for imports into Mexico.
• Assist with optimization of import processes to reduce delays, duties, and compliance risk.
Data Analysis & Reporting
• Track import compliance metrics and customs performance indicators.
• Prepare reports related to: Customs activity, Duty spend, Broker performance, Compliance trends
• Support continuous improvement initiatives related to trade compliance and import operations.
Training & Process Improvement
• Assist in development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on Mexico import requirements and trade compliance matters.
• Support implementation of process improvements and technology solutions related to customs compliance.
Qualifications
• 3–7+ years of experience in international trade compliance, customs operations, import/export logistics, or cross-border transportation.
• Strong working knowledge of Mexico customs regulations, import procedures, and trade compliance requirements.
• Experience partnering with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and internal stakeholders to support compliant import/export operations.
• Knowledge of Mexico import documentation, HS tariff classification, customs valuation principles, Incoterms, and cross-border logistics operations.
• Familiarity with Mexico customs platforms and regulatory systems, including VUCEM/VUTCE, Annex 24, and Annex 31 requirements where applicable.
• Experience supporting IMMEX program administration, compliance activities, audits, reporting, and inventory control processes.
• Understanding of MVE (Manifestación de Valor Electrónica) processes and customs valuation documentation requirements.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing, distribution, or logistics environment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with IMMEX, USMCA, and U.S.–Mexico cross-border trade operations.
• Experience supporting manufacturing or distribution environments.
• Familiarity with ERP, TMS, customs management systems, and Annex 24 inventory control systems.
• Knowledge of Mexico customs compliance risk areas, including customs valuation, country of origin verification, tariff classification, temporary imports, and documentation traceability.
• Experience supporting customs audits, broker management, reconciliation between ERP systems and customs inventory reporting, and broader customs compliance programs.
• Familiarity with evolving Mexico foreign trade compliance initiatives and increased customs enforcement trends impacting IMMEX operations.
