Summary

Provides operational and logistical support to the Department of Emergency Services by coordinating, transporting, deploying, maintaining, and recovering emergency equipment and resources. This position plays a key role in supporting planned events and departmental operations through the management of portable message boards, light towers, trailer cameras, and other logistical assets. This position is assigned to the Emergency Management division and will report to the Support Services Coordinator. Performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of duties

  1. Assists with the deployment, relocation, setup, operation, and recovery of portable electronic message boards, light towers, trailer cameras, and other emergency response equipment.
  2. Assists with coordinating equipment delivery and retrieval for emergency incidents, planned operations, training exercises, and community events.
  3. May support Incident Command and Emergency Operations Center activities by providing logistical coordination during emergency activations.
  4. Assist with the planning and logistical support for county-sponsored events, public safety demonstrations, festivals, parades, air shows, sporting events, and other special events.
  5. Coordinate placement of portable message boards and lighting equipment to support traffic management, public information, emergency response, and event operations.
  6. Deploy and manage trailer cameras and other monitoring equipment to assist with emergency management, public safety operations, damage assessments, or special assignments.
  7. Assist with warehouse organization, inventory control, equipment storage, and supply management.
  8. Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies, volunteer emergency services organizations, contractors, and other County departments regarding logistical support.
  9. Respond to emergency incidents during severe weather, disasters, and major public safety events as directed.
  10. Ensure all equipment is operated safely and in accordance with departmental policies and manufacturer specifications.
  11. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  12. This position may be deemed “essential” personnel during emergencies and can be called upon for response.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Must have the ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures.
  2. Must have the ability to gain the necessary knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating equipment, as well as for ensuring public safety.
  3. Must have the Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of various construction and maintenance projects as assigned.
  4. Must have the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and various heavy equipment.
  5. Must be able to take direction and work in a fast-paced environment.
  6. Requires the ability to stand, walk, stoop, and kneel for long periods of time.
  7. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  8. Must be able to work around dust, fumes, and odors and have the ability to work outdoors.
  9. Must be able to read printed instructions and possess basic math and language skills.

Supplemental information

  1. High school diploma or G.E.D.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Negative Drug Test.
  3. Must successfully pass background investigation with favorable results.
  4. Must Pass a pre-employment physical examination prior to employment.
  5. Must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License and clean driving record.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work requires constant physical effort including some lifting or handling of heavy tools or materials of 50 pounds or more in addition to driving heavy vehicles.

Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress requiring a range of safety and other precautions. Such situations include, but are not limited to, extreme weather conditions, and park patrons’ questions, complaints, or confrontational behavior.
