Job Title: Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology (Bacteriology)

Banding: Band 6

Location: Central England

Start date: ASAP

Working hours: Full-time

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 6 Biomedical Scientist to join a well-established laboratory in Central England on a locum basis. This role offers the chance to work within a busy Microbiology department, supporting the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services with a particular focus on Bacteriology.

What will your responsibilities be

• Perform a range of routine and specialist Microbiology investigations within a Bacteriology laboratory.
• Process, analyse, interpret, and report microbiological samples in accordance with departmental procedures.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment while ensuring quality standards are consistently met.
• Participate in the day-to-day running of the laboratory and support efficient workflow management.
• Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with UKAS, ISO 15189, and laboratory quality standards.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to support patient care and service delivery.
• Adhere to all health and safety, infection prevention, and laboratory governance policies.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

• HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
• Previous experience working as a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist in a UK Microbiology laboratory.
• Strong Bacteriology knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
• Ability to work independently within a busy diagnostic environment.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.

Desirable

• Experience using laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
• Experience working within an NHS laboratory setting.
• Knowledge of quality management systems and accreditation requirements.
