The University of New Mexico's Facility Services department is seeking a highly skilled and customer-focused Certified Locksmith to support the safety, security, and accessibility of campus facilities. This position plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing physical and electronic access systems that protect University buildings, assets, and occupants.

In this role, you will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical and electronic locking systems, door hardware, and access control devices across a diverse campus environment. Responsibilities include programming and managing electronic access, cutting and distributing keys, maintaining master key records, coordinating security-related projects, and providing cost estimates and recommendations for lock and access control installations. The successful candidate will work closely with campus departments, contractors, and Facilities personnel to ensure secure and efficient access solutions.

The ideal candidate will be a certified locksmith with experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic locking systems. Candidates must possess either a Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL) certification through the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) or a Door & Hardware Technician (DHT) credential through the Door and Hardware Institute, along with strong customer service, problem-solving, and security-focused maintenance skills.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs mechanical & electronic locks, hydraulic closing fixtures, and related hardware.
  • Installs and/or oversees the installation, programming, and repair of electronic facilities access controls.
  • Cuts new or duplicate keys, stamps, and maintains master key files and records of keys distributed, ensuring safety and security of materials and data.
  • Adds and/or modifies electronic facilities access for the University community and contractors.
  • Estimates scope and cost of projects in consultation with representatives of associated units.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and parts; maintains logs and records work performed and materials used in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • May oversee and coordinate the activities of sub-contractors in the completion of projects.
  • May maintain and repair ADA door operators, door closers, and control gates.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Please Note: This position is subject to overtime and on-call assignments, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to support campus operations.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL) by Associated Locksmiths of America or completed Door & Hardware Technician (DHT) credential by the Door and Hardware Institute.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with electronic access control systems, card access systems, and security hardware.
  • Experience maintaining master key systems and key control records.
  • Knowledge of ADA door operators, door closers, and automated entry systems.
  • Experience coordinating projects and working with contractors or vendors.
  • Strong organizational, recordkeeping, and customer service skills.
