Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervision and technical counsel and guidance to the employees of the Lock Shop.

The Lock Shop supervisor responsible for overall security access control of campus. This includes but is not limited to all buildings, rooms, and gates.

Responsible for warehouse control including receiving, managing, and disbursing inventory.

Must make independent decisions on a daily basis.

Must be able to work with Campus Housing and other on Campus departments for regulation, control, and access of all spaces by using the MEDACO System.

Coordinates with Emergency management and Safety offices with all access issues.

Manages and provides all keys to contractors.

Lock Shop Supervisor must:
  • Create and maintain various master key systems
  • Repair and install locks and other door hardware
  • Cut keys, both by duplication and from code
  • Build lock cylinders to work with assigned master key system
  • Daily inventory for the lock shop warehouse
  • Issue and restock parts from the warehouse
  • Order new parts for the warehouse
  • Respond to after-hours emergency call backs
  • Maintain computerized key records

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of high school and two years of experience in the performance of the full range of journeyman-level tasks associated with the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Functions
40% To maintain the highest degree of physical security, technical abilities and funding for materials will be required. And to be in contact with persons and departments that deal with physical security and life safety. To be responsible for planning and laying out of new lock and key systems, to include review and recommendations on renovations and new construction. To manage the fire exit ways relative to fire-rated exit devices and automatic door entrances for the physically impaired. To comply with the NC State Building Codes, and State Handicap Codes, including the new ADA Codes.

20% To be responsible for setting new standards in key control and key records management. To organize all key records and code systems on computer, and control their use in maintaining a secure Key Control Program. To be responsible for the assignment of work to the Lock Shop employees on a daily basis. To give guidance to employees whenever needed.

10% To be responsible for the supervision of the Lock Shop Warehouse. To keep a sufficient amount of materials in stock, to complete most repair orders and routine maintenance request in an efficient manner. The responsibility for any adjustments in records and inventory totals. The responsibility for adding new products to the inventory.

20% To support the electrical shop and telecommunications shop with ordering and installation of electric door strikes, electric door openers and closers, electrical smoke and fire detecting closers, and electrical magnetic hold open devices.
To be responsible for the maintenance of all safes and vaults the University uses in securing confidential records, payroll checks and currency.

10% To meet with construction supervisors, to discuss security needs for construction staging areas, while at the University.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
- Working knowledge of electronic access systems and associated equipment.

-Requires Contract/Project Management task related skills.

-Ability to operate university owned vehicles with a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from high school and some knowledge of office equipment and procedures.

Graduation from an accredited education institution dealing with all aspects of the Locksmith Trade.

At least five years of progressive experience in the planning and design of large scale Master Key Systems for an agency, university, or some large industrial organization.

At least five years of progressive experience in the maintenance and repair of fire exit devices, locksets, closer, hollow metal doors, frames, and any other lock related hardware.

Be a member of a Professional Locksmith Association to stay abreast of new technologies and equipment, and to gather valuable information from other Locksmiths that may have specialized in certain areas of the Locksmith Trade.

Working knowledge of electronic access systems and associated equipment.

Position is considered MANDATORY and is expected to be available to work during University emergencies, closures and adverse weather events.

Physical Demands of Position
Employee will be subject to extremes of heat, cold, dust, and dirt on a daily basis. Routinely lifting up to 20 pounds and required on a limited basis be subject to assist with up to 50 lbs with the aid or assistance of a team member. Call back situations may necessitate emergency repairs in extremes of inclement weather.
