Position Title: LMS Administrator / Instructional Technologist

Department: Information Technology

Reports To: Instructional Technology Manager

Appointment: Full-time, 40 hours per week (12-month position), On Campus

Status: Exempt

Position Description:

The LMS Administrator / Instructional Technologist is the principal advisor and point of contact surrounding technologies for learning and their use. They will advise on the selection, design, and implementation of effective instructional technology resources to promote student engagement and success in online, hybrid, and blended courses. This person leads training for instructional technology, and is responsible for providing exceptional customer service as they facilitate, coordinate, and oversee campus-wide use of the LMS and integrated digital tools. The LMS Administrator / Instructional Technologist tracks support issues using the campus ticket system, communicates system issues to campus constituents, and evaluates system performance. The LMS Administrator / Instructional Technologist is the primary liaison with system vendors and coordinates system upgrades and maintenance with the vendors and the university change management board.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. System Administration – The LMS Administrator / Instructional Technologist works collaboratively with others in IT to proactively manage the learning system and integrated tools used on campus to meet the instructional needs of the university. This requires the individual to understand how the systems work, what data and reporting are available, what changes need to be communicated, and how to effectively test and manage new features, upgrades, and integrations. The primary systems include Canvas, Studio, Bongo, Panopto, Zoom, Respondus, Turnitin, Qualtrics, and Course Evaluations & Surveys. They are licensed SaaS hosted in the cloud by our software vendors. The LMS Administrator / Instructional Technologist will be the primary liaison with our vendors to proactively manage these systems. Other campus systems that are managed by others on campus but inter-operate with the above systems include Google Apps for Education, M365, and Microsoft Copilot.
  2. Learning Systems Support – This person will serve as second tier support for faculty, staff, and students using the learning systems integrated tools and will be responsible for assisting in the resolution of questions and problems received directly from individuals, tickets received from the Service Desk, and vendor communications. Courteous and respectful interactions with fellow employees and students are to be expected. Good record keeping is necessary to track support issues, system maintenance, upgrades, configurations, and vendor communications. They will need to stay current with emerging educational technologies, including AI applications in teaching and learning, and incorporate relevant innovations into support practices. This person will also support best practices by helping instructors understand ADA requirements for instructional technology.
  3. Training and Documentation – The LMS Administrator / Instructional Technologist will advise on the selection, design, and implementation of effective instructional technology resources to promote student engagement and success in online, hybrid, and blended courses. They will train and support faculty through individual consultations, training presentations, and development of instructional materials. This individual will also serve on a team assisting with the creation and administration of Workday training to the campus.
  4. Campus Needs Analysis and System Evaluations – This individual will be responsible for evaluating how well current needs are being met by learning systems. This requires the individual periodically evaluate existing systems usage and end-user satisfaction, analyze findings, and make recommendations for improving systems and services. The LMS administrator will research and maintain currency of knowledge on instructional technologies, industry trends, and recommended practices and participate in or manage new system evaluations and pilots.
  5. Participate on project teams, committees, and attend meetings as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional technology, instructional design, information technology, education, or similar discipline.
  • Three years of demonstrated success in administering, using, and supporting a learning management system and other instructional technology systems.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Effective at developing and delivering training sessions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with individuals possessing varying degrees of technical proficiency.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Evidence of being a proactive, collaborative problem-solver and team member.
  • Evidence of the ability to take ownership of projects and work independently to achieve expected goals.
  • Proficient in keeping systems records and documenting technical issues and processes.
  • Ability to organize and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Evidence of maintaining confidentiality of private data and upholding information security policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years supporting multiple instructional systems, including the LMS
  • Demonstrated success in administering Canvas.
  • Experience in the higher education environment.
  • Experience in gathering systems and support data and generating reports on system use and end-user support.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a needs analysis, research and evaluate alternatives, and recommend new systems for adoption.
  • Experience conducting successful pilot tests of potential new systems.
  • Experience managing a system change at an institution.
