Salary Range: $15.31 - $22.96 Hourly
The LIVESTRONG® program at the YMCA empowers cancer survivors to improve their quality of life through exercise and building positive relationships. Under the guidance of the coordinator, instructors effectively engage cancer survivors by being knowledgeable of cancer types, surgeries and treatments, and side effects. Instructors modify and progress exercises based on each individual’s specific needs thus providing a safe and appropriate exercise program for each program participant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: .
- Organizes session dates and secures instructors to lead programming.
- Plans and leads two Livestrong graduation ceremonies per year.
- Assists in planning and organizing an annual memorial tree ceremony
- Maintains follow up responsibilities with Livestrong alumni
- Serves as a representative of Livestrong at the YMCA at community events
- Creates and ensures safe and welcoming environment for instructors and participants
- Enforces policies, problem solves and handles emergency situations
- Demonstrates the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
- Attend trainings when appropriate; monitors training status of other instructors
- Support YMCA special events, signature events, and campaigns
- Performs assessments of participants; creates an individualized exercise program from assessment results and from using Listen First skills
- Meets with members to implement a new program; determines starting reps, sets, weight, duration, and if any modifications/adaptations may be needed to the exercise or equipment.
- Demonstrates utilization of equipment, correct exercise technique and safety considerations, and how to fill out the exercise log sheet.
- Works with instructors to make minor adjustments to exercise programs as needed in response to member adaptations/tolerance to activity per session.
- Understands the unique needs and concerns of cancer survivors, resulting from their cancer diagnoses and treatments.
- Other duties assigned by the Executive Director of Programming
- Other duties as assigned and required by business necessity.
QualificationsEDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be 18+ years of age
- Background in health & wellness, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science or similar is preferred
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- CPR, First Aid, AED (must obtain within 90 days of employment)
- Foundations of Group Exercise or Foundations of Strength and Conditioning OR equivalent
- Engaging with Cancer Survivors eLearning course
- LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Instructor certification
- Ability to assist and communicate with all populations of people regardless of race, age, and special needs; understanding, empathy, and ability to connect with and develop relationships with and among cancer survivors
- Flexible schedule. Early morning, evening, and weekend hours.
- Ability to respond calmly and quickly to safety and emergency situations; render necessary assistance during emergency situations.
- Must be able to engage strangers in conversations and make all people feel welcome.
- Must pass a criminal background check
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have the physical, visual and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job. Must be able to demonstrate lifting movements, lift at least 15 pounds, bend, stoop, reach, squat.
