Job Description

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing an educational atmosphere where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, social, and practical growth. This person will organize and implement a comprehensive Life Skills/Family and Consumer Sciences instructional program that promotes academic success while developing the knowledge and skills students need for success in school, careers, and daily life in accordance with GPPSS policies, goals, and objectives.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
  • KH (Family and Consumer Sciences) endorsement required
  • Significant experience and/or coursework in Family and Consumer Sciences, Life Skills, Nutrition, Financial Literacy, Career Awareness, Child Development, Consumer Education, or related fields
  • Middle school teaching experience preferred
  • Experience creating engaging, hands-on learning opportunities preferred

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to implement and instruct established Grosse Pointe curriculum.
  • Provides instruction in life skills, nutrition and wellness, food preparation, financial literacy, consumer education, career awareness, interpersonal relationships, and family living.
  • Creates engaging, hands-on learning experiences that promote the practical application of skills in real-world settings.
  • Includes culturally diverse themes in lessons and instruction, including historical or other information as to cultures having significant impact on the world, nation, or community.
  • Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
  • Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
  • Integrates career exploration, employability skills, and career readiness concepts into instruction.
  • Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement.
  • Maintains effective and efficient record-keeping procedures.
  • Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
  • Maintains a safe, organized, and effective classroom and laboratory environment.
  • Maintains food safety and sanitation standards in accordance with district and state guidelines.
  • Manages classroom equipment, instructional materials, food supplies, and laboratory resources.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis.
  • Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment and support student success.
  • Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community members.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and schools.
  • Assumes responsibility for meeting course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Supports district initiatives related to Career and Technical Education (CTE), college and career readiness, and middle school pathway development.
  • Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating activities, and participating in professional learning opportunities.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs.
  • Prolonged periods sitting and working on the computer to complete necessary paperwork.

Compensation:

Salary is based on the GPEA CBA, which may or may not recognize previous professional teaching experience. GPEA Members are also eligible for a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System www.michigan.gov/ors
