Job Summary

The Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring the pool and surrounding aquatic areas, enforcing safety rules, responding to emergencies, and helping maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for Brooklyn Sports Club members and guests.

Maintaining a safe pool environment is the top priority. Lifeguards are expected to remain attentive, professional, and prepared to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.

This is a part-time, year-round position with consistent scheduling and programming. Unlike many seasonal lifeguard opportunities, Brooklyn Sports Club operates its aquatic facilities and programs throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of all swimmers through preventative measures and by identifying and minimizing potentially hazardous situations.
  • Maintain active and attentive surveillance of the pool and surrounding aquatic areas.
  • Enforce all pool rules and regulations in a professional, polite, and courteous manner.
  • Provide a quick and appropriate response to emergency situations in the water and pool deck areas.
  • Perform emergency procedures in accordance with current Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid training.
  • Conduct ongoing pool and aquatic facility maintenance as assigned, including adjusting feeders when necessary, checking the operation of pumps and flow meters, vacuuming the pool, washing down the deck and pump room, cleaning stainless steel surfaces and filters, and recording pool readings.
  • Monitor the aquatic facility and immediately report unsafe conditions, maintenance concerns, or equipment problems.
  • Maintain knowledge of Brooklyn Sports Club aquatic information, policies, schedules, and programming.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and wear the appropriate uniform while on duty.
  • Report to scheduled shifts on time and prepared to work.
  • Ensure that the aquatic area remains safe, clean, organized, and welcoming.
  • Communicate professionally with members, guests, coworkers, and management.
  • Complete required safety, maintenance, and incident documentation accurately and on time.
  • Participate in required safety drills, training, and staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Certifications

Applicants must possess:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
  • Current CPR/AED Certification
  • Current Standard First Aid Certification

Brooklyn Sports Club offers assistance with Lifeguard and CPR recertification for eligible team members to help maintain required certifications and support continued employment.

Additional Qualifications

  • High school education or comparable work experience.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods while maintaining active surveillance.
  • Ability to perform all swimming, rescue, and emergency-response skills required by current Lifeguard certification.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, walk, and move quickly when responding to an emergency.
  • Ability to use hands and arms to operate equipment and perform rescue procedures.
  • Ability to safely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to assist swimmers during rescue situations as required by Lifeguard training.
  • Awareness and use of proper body mechanics to prevent injury.
  • Ability to work around pool chemicals, odors, noise, humidity, heat, and varying indoor and outdoor temperatures.

Essential Functions

The position regularly requires sitting or standing, visual and auditory observation, verbal communication, use of hands and arms, and movement throughout the aquatic facility.

The position may occasionally require stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, and performing other physical activities associated with pool operations and emergency response.

The position requires the ability to react quickly and appropriately in an emergency and to perform all physical skills associated with current Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications.
