Salary:

$18.66 hourly rateUnder general supervision, ensures the safety of patrons of an aquatic facility by preventing hazardous situations and responding to emergencies. Lead responsibilities may be assigned. The position reports to an assigned manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All employees share components of leadership, management, technical, and team skills to assist in making the City of Largo the community of choice in Tampa Bay.

Leadership

Technical

  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency
  • Supervises and patrols the pool area to ensure an enjoyable experience for all patrons and regulates activities which may be injurious to others or to public property; handles disruptions in an appropriate manner
  • Rescues swimmers when they are in danger; applies emergency lifesaving and first aid techniques; and, in case of severe injuries, obtains professional aid immediately
  • Plans and executes aquatic activities
  • Gives swimming instructions and handles appropriate documentation
  • Always presents a professional appearance and attitude and maintains a high standard of customer service; answers and responds to customer inquiries
  • Prepares clear and detailed accident reports
  • Assists in training team members and volunteers
  • Cleans the pool facility with a variety of pool equipment
  • Inventories and restocks supplies for facilities and programs; may complete ordering and purchasing for the facility and scheduled programs within an allocated budget
  • May be responsible for the department's public relations by designing and updating the bulletin board and fliers as requested
  • May check facility website information for accuracy
  • Sets up and breaks down areas for activities as appropriate
  • Opens, closes, and secures the facility and ensures all rules and regulations of the facility are enforced; ensures all precautions are taken in maintaining participants’ safety; assures the safety, welfare, and well-being of participants enrolled in programs
  • Completes annual training as assigned
  • Works on City- and division-wide events
  • Processes documents and applications pertaining to membership and registrations; verifies residency for membership pricing
  • Collects activity fees and processes payments, including closing cash-outs
  • Prepares daily activity reports
  • Answers telephones, checking participants in for classes and programs, processes memberships, and provides customer service
  • Assists with the maintenance, opening, and securing of the facility and equipment; may enter service requests for facility needs and repairs
  • Monitors and maintains required certifications and training hours according to American Red Cross standards

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years old on the date of application
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certifications are preferred
  • Some positions require a valid driver's license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of modern lifesaving techniques and procedures
  • Skill in swimming, instruction, and supervision of swimmers in preventive safety methods
  • Ability to:
    • react calmly and effectively in emergencies
    • establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and patrons
    • focus for extended periods of time
    • prepare routine reports, paperwork, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 10% inside a climate-controlled building; 90% outside in hot, humid, or inclement weather.

Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately four (4) hours per day, and standing and walking approximately four (4) hours in any assigned eight (8) hour shift (or prorated based on the number of hours per shift). The work requires frequent: bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 15 pounds, lifting/carrying of objects weighing 15 to 44 pounds; often requires lifting/carrying objects weighing 45 pounds and over.

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Enough to understand what others are saying in normal conversation in person and on the telephone, and the ability to detect specific noises. Speaking: Enough to communicate orally with others in person, on the phone, and to cry out for help when needed. Seeing: Enough to see and read computer screens, spot swimmers, read fine print, and operate a motor vehicle, depending on assignment.

Driving Requirements: Some positions may require a valid Florida Driver's License, depending on assignment.

Technology: The work requires the ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators, and all associated software.

Tools: The work requires proficiency with chemical reagents, vacuums, and pressure cleaners.
