Summary

This position is responsible for providing nursing care to inmates in the county.

Examples of duties

  • Performs inmate screenings to obtain medical and mental health histories and determine the need for specialized referrals.
  • Researches and prepares referrals based on medical diagnosis.
  • Monitors the administration of medications.
  • Reviews and maintains medication records and documentation.
  • Assists sick or injured inmates as needed and responds to medical emergencies.
  • Coordinates inmate transfers to hospitals as required.
  • Prepares and administers tuberculosis (TB) tests to incoming inmates.
  • Follows physicians' standing orders when providing medical treatments to inmates.
  • Reviews inmate medical request forms and assesses inmates to determine their medical care needs.
  • Assists physicians and dentists in providing patient care and treatment.
  • Orders patient medications through the contracted pharmacy.
  • Collects medical specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Assists correctional officers as needed.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in nursing care.
  • Knowledge of medical screening protocols.
  • Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports.
  • Skill in providing patient care.
  • Skill in preparing and delivering training and instruction.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must have at least one ( 1 ) year of related experience.
  • Must possess a current and valid certification as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) issued by the State of Texas.

  • The work consists of varied duties related to providing health screenings and nursing care to inmates.
  • The unique needs of each inmate contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide nursing care to inmates. Success in this position contributes to the health and safety of inmates.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Occasionally

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, etc.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 25 pounds in all directions.
  • Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
  • Working in low temperatures.
  • Working in high temperatures.
  • Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Working in noisy environments.

Constantly

  • Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.

  • Must possess a valid and current Texas Driver's License with an acceptable driving history. *If the applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver’s License must be obtained prior to employment.
