OUH Psychiatry and Behavioral Health is a fast-paced mission-driven environment focused on improving access to high-quality mental health care across Oklahoma. Our clinics serve approximately 2,500 unique individuals each month through a multidisciplinary team of 50+ providers, including MDs, Dos, residents, Social Workers, Psychologists, and Neuropsychologists. Our teams work collaboratively to support patients with compassion, integrity, and excellence while continuously improving clinical operations and patient experience. We are seeking individuals who are adaptable, team-oriented, and passionate about making a difference in behavioral health care.

Under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or Behavioral Health Therapists the specialist will utilize behavioral interventions, clinical, and technical knowledge to support patients by coaching, leading groups sessions, and contributing to the patient care team.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient assessments to evaluate mental health status, risk factors, and treatment needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with therapists, psychiatrists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based techniques (e.g., CBT, DBT).
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support during acute behavioral episodes.
  • Monitor patient progress, adjust interventions as needed, and document all clinical interactions in the medical record.
  • Educate patients and families on coping strategies, treatment options, and self-management skills.
  • Coordinate referrals to community resources (e.g., support groups, social services, outpatient programs).
  • Support medication adherence by reinforcing provider instructions and monitoring for side effects.
  • Advocate for patient needs within multidisciplinary treatment teams and ensure continuity of care.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all legal, ethical, and institutional regulations regarding behavioral health care.
  • Caring for multiple patients.
  • Facilitates therapeutic activities and conducts patient/family teaching including unit/program orientation, goals group, and wrap- up groups.
  • May assist with the training of other Behavioral Health Technicians.
  • Will train peers in non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Monitors patients in clinical and medical therapies.
  • Monitors, engages in and promotes a safe patient milieu.
  • Participates in implementing patients’ treatment plan by monitoring patients’ progress and communicates information regarding patient behavior to other members of the team.
  • Recognizes and reports adverse reactions to medications.
  • Responds to emergency situations related to dangerous or potentially dangerous patient behaviors.
  • Will assist with most complex patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work or a related field required.

Experience Requirements

  • 3 or more years experience in healthcare.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of hire)
  • Crisis Intervention and Patient de-escalation certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification for Behavioral Health Technician upon hire. (American association of psychiatric technicians, Registered Behavior Technician with BACB, Certified Behavioral Health Specialist (CBHS) with NPS, Certified Mental health technician with NCCB)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of human behavior and/or principles of psychology.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations. Advanced knowledge of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to adverse drug reactions.
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Expert knowledge of computer systems.
  • Expert interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication, empathy, and active listening are crucial for building rapport and trust with clients.
