The Highline College Library provides an inclusive, welcoming environment with quality services and resources that support the digital/information literacy and lifelong learning needs of our diverse students, faculty, and staff. We work collaboratively with faculty, students and staff to develop library literacy skills and to foster successful learning environments.

Highline College is seeking a customer service-focused and collaborative Library Services Manager to lead daily library circulation and technical services operations. As a member of the Library Management Team, this position supports equitable student success through culturally responsive practices, compassionate leadership, and a commitment to serving diverse and historically underserved students.

This position is an exempt full-time position and is eligible for overtime.

Examples of duties

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Library and Student Learning Resources, this position will:

Customer Service

  • Maintain a welcoming, student-centered library environment aligned with the college’s strategic and anti-racist goals;
  • Coordinate and train circulation staff and other library employees assigned to circulation desk duties to ensure consistent, high-quality service and adherence to established library policies;
  • Resolve patron concerns promptly and professionally.

Supervisory

  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate circulation and technical services staff and student employees;
  • Ensure effective daily library operations by overseeing scheduling, training, and performance monitoring;
  • Train staff and students on providing library services including basic technology troubleshooting and ready reference, referring in-depth and complex questions to a Librarian.

Operational

  • Plan, organize, and oversee all library circulation and technical services operations and workflows;
  • Direct and assess workflows in Ex Libris Alma; train campus staff in effective system use, provide reports as needed;
  • Provide consistent circulation desk coverage and deliver operational support for assigned functional areas;
  • Stay informed on academic library trends and best practices;
  • Evaluate existing library services and recommend innovative solutions responsive to evolving campus needs.

Collaboration

  • Serve as an active member of the Library Management Team, contribute to strategic initiative, project planning, and assessment processes; advocate for circulation and technical services priorities;
  • Assist with library outreach initiatives, including participation in outreach events;
  • Serve on campus committees;
  • Represent Highline College and keep current on developments in the Alma library services platforms (LSP) by actively participating in the Washington State Community and Technical College Library Consortium (WACTCLC).

Administrative

  • Establish measurable goals that advance library services and track progress toward completion;
  • Lead emergency training for library staff and lead all communication related to building issues;
  • Generate and analyze reports on circulation trends, operational activities, and gate counts;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Policies

  • Develop and recommend student-centered library policies and procedures in collaboration with the Library Management Team;
  • Enforce campus and library policies and procedures and ensure compliance with FERPA and confidentiality requirements.

  • Ability to identify barriers to student success and recommend improvements;
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships across diverse groups;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google products;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage timelines and competing priorities;
  • Self-starter with strong independent decision-making skills;
  • Ability to coordinate activities across library and campus departments;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and execute projects.

Additional Information

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work occurs in both an office environment and at a library public service desk. This role involves spending time at a computer workstation, moving throughout the library to support operations and consult with colleagues, and sustaining attention and accuracy in a busy setting with frequent interruptions.

WORK SCHEDULE:

40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, between the hours of 8:00 am - 6:00 pm; May work Sundays as backup as needed.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years customer service experience; AND
  • 2 years of supervisory experience; AND
  • Significant progress or completion of Ex Libris/Alma certification within 12 months of the hire date.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Bi-lingual;
  • Experience in an educational setting;
  • Knowledge of LSPs and discovery services such as Ex Libris Alma and Primo, and usage-statistics reporting tools.
