PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The hiring range for this position is $18.65 - $23.31 per hour

Position Information:

The City of Aurora's Library and Cultural Services Department is looking for two Library Security Clerks to provide the highest level of customer service. These individuals will provide customer service and will be a main point of contact to visitors.

Our Public Library Services create positive impacts on Aurora neighborhoods. Our libraries are used by a diverse group of patrons who come from all over the world with diverse educational and socio-economic backgrounds.

Locations: We will be looking to fill two positions. These positions will work primarily at assigned locations below, hours may change based on business need. May be required occasionally to substitute at another Aurora Library location based on staffing needs.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (9898 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, CO 80010) – Hours will include days, nights and weekends, but will primarily be a Monday – Friday, 9:15 AM – 6:15 PM schedule.
  • Central Library (14949 E. Alameda Pkwy, Aurora, CO 80012) – Hours will include days, nights and weekends, but will primarily be a Tuesday - Saturday, 9:15 AM – 6:15 PM schedule.

Hours and location are subject to change dependent upon department needs.

The ideal candidate will possess experience with working in a library system, pay close attention to detail and have excellent customer service skills that allow them to work within a diverse network of coworkers and patrons. They will also have cash handling experience in addition to a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides friendly and professional basic library security as well as customer assistance for library service needs.
  • Conducts patrols of facilities – both inside and outside. Checks doors and non-public areas to ensure they are secure.
  • Assists staff in addressing disruptive behavior, customer concerns and other security related incidents but does not detain, restrain, or physically touch customers outside of life-threatening situations.
  • Consults with Operations Manager as well as supervisory staff for direction on actions to be taken in non-emergency situations.
  • Completes incident reports and logs them into the electronic database.
  • Works with staff, contract guard services, and/or emergency services to assist in incident investigations
  • Observes or reviews security camera footage
  • Assists with research and programs
  • Proactively ensures that library space is neat and organized (e.g. furniture and equipment is in order, shelves are well organized, displays are creative and refreshed regularly).
  • Conducts general office/administrative/clerical tasks
  • Checks book/other items in and out, manages patron accounts, places items on hold, processes prospector items through computerized system.
  • Sorts, processes, shelves, and assists with other general library materials inventory management duties.
  • Answers basic reference, reader's advisory, general customer questions, and provides basic computer usage support.
  • Operates a cash register, conducts customer payment transactions, maintains a cash drawer
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Minimum Experience:

  • At least 1 year of security experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 6 months of direct customer service in retail or service industry setting preferred.
  • Library background experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred but not required.

Knowledge:

  • Customer service techniques.
  • Routine software/computer systems including the internet.
  • Email, word processing, spreadsheets, database input/use.
  • Inventory/customer transaction systems.

Skills:

  • Skill in the use of windows-based programs
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Strong report writing skills

Abilities:

  • Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Exercise good judgement in difficult and/or tense situations.
  • Communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner.
  • Tactfully and judiciously implement customer conduct policies.
  • Use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work shifts, including some nights, and weekends.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Medium physical work requiring the ability to lift 40 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Ability to review and interpret reports and other written documents with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to communicate with employees, contractors, and residents in field environments, with or without reasonable accommodation

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily indoorswith shared workstations and equipment.
  • Shift work to include days, nights, and weekends.

Equipment Used:

  • Frequently uses computer keyboard and telephone, fax machines, printers and copiers.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment. 

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
