Job Description

Title: Elementary Library Media Specialist

Location: Jefferson and IXL Elementary

Position Summary: The Elementary Library Media Specialist is responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive library media program that supports the academic, literacy, and technology goals of the school. The librarian fosters a love of reading, teaches information literacy skills, collaborates with classroom teachers, and provides equitable access to print and digital resources that support student learning and achievement.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain an effective elementary library media program aligned with district curriculum and instructional goals.
  • Teach library, research, digital citizenship, and information literacy skills to students in grades PreK-5.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive library environment that promotes literacy, creativity, inquiry, and lifelong learning.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources and instructional technology into classroom instruction.
  • Select, acquire, catalog, and maintain print, digital, and multimedia resources appropriate for elementary learners.
  • Promote reading through book talks, reading initiatives, author studies, literacy events, and library programming.
  • Assist students in selecting age-appropriate reading materials based on interests and instructional needs.
  • Manage circulation, inventory, collection development, and library automation systems.
  • Provide guidance in the ethical use of information and technology resources.
  • Coordinate school-wide literacy activities, book fairs, and special library events.
  • Support students and staff in the use of educational technology and digital learning resources.
  • Maintain accurate library records, reports, and inventories.
  • Supervise library volunteers, aides, and student helpers as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, staff information, and district operations.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and respect.
  • Ensure student safety and appropriate conduct at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building Principal or district administration.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Valid Kansas teaching license with appropriate Library Media endorsement required.
  • Knowledge of library management systems and educational technology.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and instructional skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a school team.
  • Successful completion of required background check and employment screenings.
  • Must meet all district and state employment requirements.
