Within this role, the candidate will promote ACPL’s values and mission while following established policies and procedures. The purpose of this position is to serve the informational, reference, and reading needs of library patrons of all ages at ACPL and will be expected to perform any and all routine tasks necessary for the operation of the library system. This position works under the supervision of the Branch Manager. This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, a benefited position requiring one evening per week and weekend rotation.

The best candidate will possess a strong commitment to providing customer-focused service for a positive library experience and to relate tactfully and courteously with a wide range of diverse patrons and community members and plan, facilitate & implement appropriate programs for children.

Examples of duties

  • Regular public service duties include staffing all service desks
  • Troubleshoot minor technology-related issues, keeping management aware of issues
  • Plan, facilitate & implement appropriate programs for children
  • Track and report relevant statistics
  • Take responsibility for the appearance of the library and the condition of shelves
  • Assist with the maintenance of library collections
  • Develop relationships with local schools, childcare facilities & home schoolers

  • Create eye-catching displays to increase circulation and promote programs
  • Create or maintain reading lists for reader’s advisory
  • Increase skills and knowledge through professional readings, workshops and webinars
  • Possess a willingness to learn about local community events and current trends in libraries
  • Actively engage the public during community programs
  • Design marketing materials for programming
  • Read stories aloud with appropriate expressions, sing songs, and use props during storytelling programs
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Some college is required
  • Experience working with children in a formal setting is required
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication is required
  • One year of customer service experience is required.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required

Computer Skills

  • Prior experience with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, basic internet searching and social media is required
  • Ability to learn library technology is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred
  • Knowledge of child development, children’s literature and reading trends is preferred

  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to provide respectful, equitable assistance to patrons of all backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, internet searching, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to learn and apply library-specific technology, including ILS systems and electronic resources.
  • Creativity in program planning, display design, and patron engagement.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and accountability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, reach, squat, and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull loaded book carts and access materials on high and low shelves.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patrons and staff in a busy environment
