Job Description

BRMi is seeking a Legal Specialist to support the processing and administration of legal orders affecting member accounts. This role is responsible for reviewing and accurately processing garnishments, child support orders, tax liens, IRS levies, and other legal documentation while ensuring actions are completed in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, organizational procedures, and required deadlines.

The ideal candidate has previous experience working in a legal, court, financial services, or compliance-focused environment and is comfortable reviewing legal documents, interpreting instructions, managing sensitive information, and completing time-sensitive work with a high degree of accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process garnishments, child support orders, tax liens, IRS levies, and other legal orders received by the organization.
  • Interpret legal documentation to determine required actions, applicable deadlines, and affected accounts or funds.
  • Place appropriate restrictions or holds on member accounts and funds in accordance with legal orders and established procedures.
  • Ensure legal requests are processed accurately, completely, and within required timeframes.
  • Review account information and supporting documentation to identify funds or accounts subject to legal action.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to legal orders and actions taken.
  • Monitor assigned cases and ensure required follow-up activities are completed.
  • Handle confidential member, financial, and legal information appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal departments and other stakeholders regarding legal requests, documentation, and processing requirements.
  • Identify incomplete, conflicting, or potentially problematic documentation and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies related to legal orders and account restrictions.
  • Follow established procedures while exercising sound judgment when situations require additional review.
  • Manage multiple legal requests and priorities independently while meeting deadlines.
  • Support compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a legal, court, compliance, banking, financial services, or similarly regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of legal documentation, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong ability to review and interpret detailed documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to exercise discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to identify issues requiring additional review or escalation.
  • Proficiency with standard business applications and the ability to learn internal systems and processes.

Desired:

  • Previous experience working in an attorney's office, law firm, courthouse, court system, or legal department.
  • Experience processing or reviewing garnishments, child support orders, tax liens, levies, subpoenas, or similar legal documents.
  • Experience working with bank or credit union deposit accounts.
  • Experience applying legal orders or restrictions to customer/member accounts or funds.
  • Familiarity with legal terminology and court-issued documentation.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated or compliance-driven environment.
