Legal Secretary-(50032200)

This is a non-represented role. The salary range for this posting is $43,442 - $ 57,362

Provides administrative and information-management support to in-house School District attorneys including general secretarial assistance. Coordinates office functions for attorneys.

Essential Functions

  • Provides administrative and clerical support for assigned attorney practice area, including preparing briefs, pleadings and other documents.
  • Prepares and maintains electronic case management docket of matters; sets up and maintains legal case files; checks status of cases on-line or by personal contact; notifies interested parties of the time and place of conferences, meetings and travel.
  • Files record papers electronically in state and federal courts.
  • Coordinates and communicates with clients effectively.
  • Welcomes guests and callers by greeting them in person or on the telephone, answering or directing inquiries.
  • Maintains attorney calendar by planning and scheduling appointments; answers routine telephone inquiries; opens and distributes mail; composes replies to routine correspondence.
  • Uses computers for word processing, e-mail and other functions related to assigned work.
  • Sorts, maintains and purges correspondence and other file materials.
  • Operates postage, copy and fax machines.
  • Shares in maintaining office supplies, equipment and sorting mail.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of full-time, paid legal and related secretarial experience.

OR

  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Talent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of:

the form and content of legal forms and documents.

legal terminology, spelling and basic legal research.

business English, arithmetic, punctuation and grammar.

standard office practices and procedures.

basic personal computer equipment and Microsoft Office functions

confidentiality of attorney client communication and attorney work product.

excellent organizational skills.

  • Ability to:

type from rough draft or clear copy

independently prepare and assemble entire briefs and other legal documents.

secure and copy docket entries.

utilize case reports, opinions, decisions, docket entries and texts in copying pertinent material in the preparation of briefs and pleadings.

use a computer and software effectively.

perform moderately varied arithmetic computations and tabulations accurately with reasonable speed.

understand and carry out written and oral directions.

establish and maintain effective working relationships.
