Job Description

Are you ready to be a big part of something big?

At carsales, we’re all about making buying and selling a great experience. Since 1997, we’ve been evolving with the new economy to help people choose how they move - today and tomorrow.

When it comes to your career, we want to offer meaningful opportunities that empower you to make a lasting impact. But for that to happen, we strive to feel small - small enough to stay agile, learn across teams, and connect authentically with each other.

With a vision to be the global leader in online vehicle marketplaces, we’re transforming how people buy and sell across the world. We discover new ideas and bring them to life. We continue to grow, and we continue to evolve and we’re not afraid to take bold steps to get there.

Our Legal team is small but mighty, made up of highly skilled specialists in their field who support the business to reach its goals whilst minimising risk. This is your opportunity to join as Legal Counsel - Privacy, working with a wide range of stakeholders to provide privacy legal advice and coordinate a variety of privacy compliance activities.

We embrace hybrid working - combining the flexibility of remote work with the energy and connection of in-person collaboration. We champion flexibility and offer a range of policies and leave options to support your wellbeing.

What’s on offer

  • Recognition as one of Australia’s Best Workplaces™ by Great Place to Work®, a Family Friendly Workplace, a WORK180 endorsed employer.
  • A highly engaged, collaborative team where you’ll learn from exceptional talent.
  • 24 weeks paid parental leave for primary caregivers, four weeks for secondary caregivers, and six weeks paid gender-affirming care leave.
  • Regular hackathons, continuous learning opportunities, and wellbeing initiatives that support your mental, emotional, and physical health.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide practical privacy law advice to the Australian business.
  • Develop and implement privacy policies, procedures and training predominantly in the Australian business.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments and report on risks.
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments and take corrective action when necessary.
  • Investigate and respond to privacy incidents.
  • Work closely the Risk and Data teams and with a group of Privacy Champions across the business.
  • Stay up to date with privacy laws and regulations and assist with implementing changes required as a result of law reforms.
  • Liaise with overseas privacy functions as needed.

Qualifications

What we’re looking for:

  • Demonstrated inclusive and interpersonal attributes that connect you to our behaviours (we change the game, we own it, we step in, we are curious, we don’t take ourselves too seriously).
  • 4-5 PQE+ experience as a lawyer, including strong experience in the privacy space.
  • Unrestricted Australian practising certificate.
  • Experience in contract drafting and negotiation.
  • Sound knowledge of recent and upcoming privacy-related reforms.
  • Ability to create privacy training material.
  • Ability to manage privacy-related compliance activities.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with data mapping tools or consent management platforms viewed favourably.
  • Exposure to international jurisdictions, international privacy compliance and frameworks (particularly GDPR and CCPA), artificial intelligence and technology businesses viewed favourably.
  • Experience with privacy audits, gap analysis and follow-up, together with privacy tools and practices viewed favourably.

We know not everyone will meet every requirement, and that’s okay. If you’re excited about the role and believe you can make a difference, we’d love to hear from you.

Additional Information

A few other things we want you to know...

  • As an equal opportunity employer, carsales welcomes applications from individuals of all backgrounds, identities, abilities, and life experiences. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and supported.

About carsales

At carsales, we’re all about making buying and selling a great experience. For over 25 years we’ve been evolving with the new economy to help people choose how they move today and tomorrow.

We started out with the idea of digitising print classifieds back in 1997 when we thought that ‘this internet thing might actually be starting to take off’. Fast forward to today and we have close to 800 team members across Australia and New Zealand and we’re part of CAR Group - an ASX 50 business and a global leader in digital marketplaces across Oceania, Asia and The Americas.

And don’t let our name fool you – we might have the word “car” in there, but we’re about so much more....

When it comes to your career, we want to provide big opportunities to help you make a big impact. But for this to be possible, we strive to feel small. Small enough to quickly change tack, small enough to learn from different departments and small enough to connect authentically with leadership.

Not something you’d expect from one of the country’s biggest tech companies, is it?

There are a lot of things to love about carsales. Our uniqueness comes from having the rare combination of being able to provide all the benefits of a big tech company – being growth, security and resource – coupled with the feeling of a small organisation, which gives agility, opportunity and autonomy to our people. We’re a place where you can truly move your career forward and we’re proud to offer a dynamic workplace experience which transcends a mere list of perks and benefits.

Our people are Software Developers. Engineers. Product Managers. Data Analysts. Designers. Sales, Media and Advertising specialists. Researchers. Customer Service stars. Content Producers. Finance experts. Photographers. Marketing magicians. Legal eagles. And People and Culture peeps.
