The Position

Senior Legal Counsel

Legal Business Development & Corporate Team

We are offering an exciting legal role that will help us to shape the future for patients across the globe. We focus on making a difference with cutting-edge technologies in research, development and commercialization of innovative therapeutic products. To that end, we are looking for an experienced transactional attorney within the Chinese pharma and biotech ecosystem. You have educational and/or professional exposure outside China and a global mindset and are capable of communicating at ease across cultures. You will be part of our global Legal Business Development & Corporate team. You are curious and have an outstanding ability to build and maintain relationships both locally and globally. You can seamlessly translate global expertise into local best practice and vice versa.

You will be based at Roche Shanghai and work with a team of outstanding local and global legal experts. Functionally, you will report to the Roche headquarters in Basel as a member of our global team of attorneys who support Roche’s business development transactions (licensing, mergers and acquisitions, venture investments) and over time build a growing portfolio of complex global and local licensing transactions and alliances for which you take on the legal responsibility. You will serve as a strategic legal advisor and trusted business partner and commensurate risk appropriately and pragmatically. You will provide legal training in support of business needs and collaboratively work together with people from many geographies and cultures.

Who you are

  • Attorney with bar admission/ bar exam in good standing in China, and educational and/or professional experience in an English speaking country outside China

  • At least 5 years post bar legal experience

  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written)

  • Vast experience in negotiating and drafting of complex transactions

  • In-depth experience and exposure to one or more of the following practice areas: Pharma/biotech licensing, IP and technology law, corporate law; technical background in life sciences preferred, but not a strict requirement

  • Sound understanding of regulations with geopolitical impact on business development transactions

  • Experience working inhouse for pharma/biotech companies or in a law firm supporting clients from the pharma/biotech industry,

  • Ability to maintain and build relationships locally and globally

  • Ability to proactively and independently identify and manage legal issues and risks thoroughly, yet pragmatically

  • Experience in providing strategic legal advice, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, translating knowledge and expertise across functions and cultures

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn

  • tech/AI affinity

  • Ability to work across global time zones and within multicultural teams
