Job Description

The opportunity: Legal Counsel – Permanent contract

At HSBC, our purpose is opening up a world of opportunity and by joining our team, you can be part of something bigger. We are committed to removing barriers and ensuring careers at HSBC are inclusive and accessible.

Being part of HSBC in Luxembourg, you’ll help evolve and grow our Legal function. Do you have strong Luxembourg/EU legal experience in securities/fund services? And/or in digital assets? Have you provided pragmatic, commercial legal advice to Corporate/Institutional Banking stakeholders? Are you an excellent communicator with good organizational skills?

If you answered yes to these questions, we want to hear from you!

What you will do:

Reporting to the Luxembourg General Counsel, you will provide high-quality internal legal advice and support to HSBC Continental Europe in Luxembourg, including Securities Services (fund administration) and Corporate Banking and Global Payment Solutions (CIB). You will help manage the Group’s legal risk exposure and enable the effective delivery of business and operational strategies and initiatives.

In this role, you will (but not limited to):

  • Act as a trusted adviser to CIB, providing commercially aware, pragmatic legal support and advice in a cost-effective manner.
  • Support and guide CIB and, where relevant, other HSBC entities in Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Legal Function on legal risks within your area of expertise.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with panel law firms and other external stakeholders.
  • Promote initiatives that encourage the sharing of legal knowledge and best practices across the Regional and Global Legal function.
  • Co-ordinate and manage the approach to legal risk in Luxembourg, ensuring the HSBC Group’s interests are adequately protected.
  • Help the business meet legal risk management and compliance requirements.

You should apply if you have:

  • Strong knowledge of Luxembourg and EU law, acquired either in private practice or in-house within an international group in securities/fund services businesses and/or a Management Company. Experience across corporate banking, payments, digital assets and cash management is a strong advantage.
  • Up-to-date understanding of developments in banking law and funds.
  • Ability to handle a diverse range of legal and regulatory matters (e.g. general banking, regulatory developments, AIFMD, UCITS, MIFID II, PSD, GDPR, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to identify, explain, and manage legal risk effectively.
  • Experience managing relationships with external legal counsels, including controlling external legal spend.
  • Fluency in French and English.

Even if you feel you do not meet 100% of our qualifications, we encourage you to apply if you believe this role is right for you.

What you’ll get in return:

Variable pay is designed to reward colleagues for their individual performance and contribution, as well as the performance of their relevant Business / Infrastructure, and the overall Group.
