We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Legal Counsel to join our team.

This role will act as corporate legal counsel, providing legal support across multiple areas of the business. This is a generalist role with a focus on marketing, advertising, intellectual property, and regulatory law, contract negotiation, and may be required to assist in other areas of corporate commercial legal work as needed.

This role reports to the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary. This role is an in-person role based in the company’s offices in Mississauga, Ontario.

This is an in-person role, based in the Mississauga office of Arterra Wines Canada, Inc. Current office attendance is hybrid (mandatory 3 days per week, Tuesday to Thursday), but the company may require employees to attend in-person on other days, or to return to 5 days per week in-person at any time

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for contract negotiation, drafting and review – in all areas of the business, including commercial agreements, information technology, intellectual property, marketing and procurement.

  • Responsible for expertise in laws, regulations and policy relating to alcohol and beverage products and licensing, information technology, privacy, product innovation and providing legal advice and research on same.

  • Responsible for clearing, registering and managing the company’s IP (trademark) portfolio and IP adversarial matters, with external counsel.

  • May have exposure to other areas of law (e.g. commercial, corporate, M&A) on ad hoc basis.

  • Responsible for coordinating with external counsel on specific assignments, reviewing preliminary advice and providing internal recommendations.

  • Provide advice and training on legal compliance of product and operations, which may include without limitation: liquor regulations, food regulations, packaging and labelling regulations, marketing and advertising, contract law, privacy, technology, consumer protection, and other areas of governance.

  • Reviewing or preparing standard form agreements; providing legal reporting, review processes, resources and policies

  • Responsible for assisting the General Counsel and coordinating with external counsel on other general assignments as needed, reviewing preliminary advice and providing internal recommendations.

What You Bring:

  • Law Degree (J.D. or LL.B.) from an accredited law school

  • Called to the Bar of Ontario

  • 2-3 years experience in the legal department of a large company or a top tier law firm

  • Experience practicing corporate commercial law, marketing and advertising law, regulatory law, IP, privacy law, draftinIP, privacyng contracts, and negotiating, advising and/or representing parties in litigation maters

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Additional Skills (Not Required, Considered Assets)

  • Working knowledge French/English written and verbal skills are a preferred asset, but not required

  • Prior in-house experience

  • Experience with providing legal advice to clients in the consumer-packaged goods, food and beverage, consumer digital or regulated product industries

  • Previous experience advising in industries regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario

Compensation Budgeted Range$97,301.00-$133,789.00

The budgeted range takes into account several factors and qualifications that are considered in making compensation decisions including experience, education, training, licenses, certifications, and other business and organizational requirements. Base pay is only one component of the total rewards offering at Arterra.
