Job Description

MPI’s Legal Services Department has an exciting opportunity for experienced Legal Counsel to join our team. The successful applicant will have significant experience practicing civil litigation.

As Legal Counsel for MPI you will conduct litigation in the Court of King’s Bench, and the Court of Appeal, Small Claims, represent MPI before the Automobile Injury Compensation Appeal Commission (AICAC) and other administrative tribunals.In this role you will act as a senior member of the legal team, providing mentorship to more junior lawyers, while also preparing legal opinions, and delivering legal education to MPI staff.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex general litigation including subrogation and defence work, at all levels of Court in Manitoba.
  • Conduct appeals before AICAC and other administrative tribunals.
  • Lead and conduct legal research and opinions on a wide variety of issues, complex problems and risks that impact MPI across all its lines of business.
  • Prepare and provide seminars on various legal issues to MPI staff.
  • Mentor, advise, and instruct Legal Counsel and articling students as required.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree from a recognized Canadian (or equivalent) law school.
  • Call to the Manitoba Bar, or eligibility to be Called to the Manitoba Bar.
  • Five years’ experience practicing civil litigation is preferred. Experience practicing insurance litigation or administrative law is an asset.
  • Significant experience in drafting pleadings, briefs and conducting examinations for discovery, motions, trials, appeals, and administrative hearings is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in legal research.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and time constraints, and to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and an eye for detail.
  • Fluency in French (would be an asset, but is not required).
