About the Role

Our client, a reputable and fast-growing law firm in Lekki, Lagos, is seeking an exceptional Legal Associate to join its dynamic legal team. The successful candidate will provide legal advisory services, manage litigation matters, conduct legal research, draft and review legal documentation, and support clients across corporate, commercial, and dispute resolution matters.

The ideal candidate is a proactive legal professional with excellent advocacy, analytical, and drafting skills, capable of managing multiple legal matters while delivering practical, commercially sound, and client-focused legal solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Advisory & Client Services

  • Provide timely, accurate, and commercially focused legal advice to clients across a broad range of legal matters.
  • Interpret and apply Nigerian laws, regulations, judicial authorities, and legal precedents to support client objectives.
  • Attend client meetings, consultations, and negotiations while delivering practical legal solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with clients through exceptional service delivery.
  • Advise clients on legal risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.

Litigation & Dispute Resolution

  • Represent clients in litigation before courts of competent jurisdiction, arbitration proceedings, mediation, and other alternative dispute resolution forums.
  • Prepare litigation strategies and manage cases from commencement through final determination.
  • Draft and file court processes, including pleadings, motions, affidavits, written addresses, briefs of argument, notices, and appeals.
  • Conduct legal advocacy before trial and appellate courts where required.
  • Attend court proceedings and liaise with judges, court registries, opposing counsel, and regulatory authorities.
  • Monitor litigation timelines and ensure compliance with court rules and procedural deadlines.
  • Maintain comprehensive litigation files and provide regular updates to clients and management.

Corporate & Commercial Practice

  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on commercial contracts, corporate agreements, service agreements, employment contracts, leases, shareholders' agreements, and other legal instruments.
  • Conduct legal due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, investments, and corporate transactions.
  • Prepare corporate governance documentation, Board resolutions, and statutory filings.
  • Advise clients on company secretarial matters and regulatory compliance obligations.
  • Assist with business registrations, post-incorporation filings, regulatory approvals, and licensing requirements.

Legal Research & Documentation

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research using statutory provisions, case law, and legal databases.
  • Prepare well-reasoned legal opinions, memoranda, advisory notes, and legal reports.
  • Draft, review, and proofread legal correspondence and transactional documents.
  • Monitor legislative developments, judicial decisions, and regulatory changes affecting clients.
  • Maintain an organized repository of legal precedents, templates, and research materials.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

  • Advise clients on compliance with applicable Nigerian laws and regulatory frameworks.
  • Support clients with regulatory filings and interactions with government agencies.
  • Identify legal and regulatory risks associated with business operations and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Ensure all legal documentation complies with applicable legislation and professional standards.
  • Assist clients with corporate governance and compliance best practices.

Case & Practice Management

  • Manage assigned legal matters from inception through completion while maintaining the highest professional standards.
  • Maintain accurate case records, legal files, and document management systems.
  • Prepare periodic matter status reports for Partners and clients.
  • Ensure timely execution of client instructions and adherence to court and regulatory deadlines.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information and legal documentation.

Business Development & Professional Practice

  • Support client acquisition and business development initiatives.
  • Participate in legal seminars, client presentations, and networking activities.
  • Contribute to legal publications, articles, newsletters, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Build long-term relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Represent the firm professionally while upholding its values and reputation.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from a recognized university.
  • Barrister-at-Law (B.L.) qualification from the Nigerian Law School.
  • Must be duly called to the Nigerian Bar and enrolled as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2–4 years' post-call experience in a reputable law firm.
  • Demonstrable experience in litigation, corporate and commercial law, dispute resolution, legal advisory, and contract drafting.
  • Experience handling matters before superior courts of record will be an added advantage.
  • Previous exposure to company secretarial practice, regulatory compliance, and corporate transactions is desirable.
