About The Team

The School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry and Physics comprises 26 academic staff and is expected to grow. It delivers its own undergraduate programs (BSc Mathematical Sciences and BSc Physical Sciences) and a Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy.

The School also plays a key role in service teaching, providing Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematical Science units across the University. Its undergraduate majors (Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics and Statistics) are also taken as second majors by students from other degrees. In addition, the school contributes significantly to the Data Analytics, Forensic Chemistry, and Secondary Education majors.

Research in the School tends to be applied and interdisciplinary. All academics across the school have active research projects both within and outside their subdisciplines. Research projects span, for example, key industries of mining and mineral processing, agriculture and food, human and animal health, environmental and sustainably. Our academics are also engaged with their respective National Societies.

Your New Role!

A Lecturer (Level B) academic will undertake independent teaching and research in their discipline or related area. In research and/or scholarship and/or teaching, a Level B academic will make an independent contribution through professional practice and expertise and coordinate and/or lead the activities of other staff, as appropriate to the discipline. A Level B academic will normally contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level, engage in independent scholarship and/or research and/or professional activities appropriate to their profession or discipline. They will normally undertake administration primarily relating to their activities at the institution and may be required to perform the full academic responsibilities of and related administration for the coordination of an award program of the institution

A Senior Lecturer (Level C) academic will make a significant contribution to the discipline at the national level. In research and/or scholarship and/or teaching they will make original contributions, which expand knowledge or practice in their discipline. A Level C academic will normally make a significant contribution to research and/or scholarship and/or teaching and administration activities of an organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level. They will normally play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership in scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession, discipline and/or community and may be required to perform the full academic responsibilities of and related administration for the coordination of a large award program or a number of smaller award programs of the institution.

Your Key responsibilities will include –

• The appointee will contribute to the teaching, research, and service activities of the discipline of Statistics within the School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry & Physics (MSCP), while also supporting and advancing the University’s programs in Data Science. The position is intended to strengthen Murdoch University’s capability in statistical science, with a focus on rigorous statistical methodology, modelling, and data-driven inference, alongside effective engagement with contemporary data science practice.

• The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching in Statistics and Data Science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This includes core statistical areas such as probability, statistical inference, and modelling, as well as contributions to data science education through statistical computing, data analysis, and reproducible workflows. The appointee will contribute to the development, coordination, and continuous improvement of units and programs, and collaborative teaching with other schools.

• The appointee will develop and maintain a strong research program in Statistics, producing high-quality outputs and contributing to multidisciplinary, data-intensive projects. The role emphasizes expertise in study design, modelling, and advanced statistical methods, alongside collaboration across Statistics, Data Science, and other relevant disciplines.

Lecturer (Level B): $115,512 - $136,831 plus 17% employer superannuation contributions.

Senior Lecturer (Level C): $141,088 - $162,403 plus 17% employer superannuation contributions.

What you’ll bring to the role:

• A PhD in Statistics, or a closely related discipline with demonstrated rigorous training (eg. Undergraduate) in statistical theory, modelling, and inference, evidenced through qualifications and research outputs.
• Evidence of an emerging (lecturer) or established national (Senior lecturer) research profile in Statistics, or related e.g. Data Science), demonstrating engagement with methodological, modelling, and/or applied statistical research. Evidence may include high-quality research outputs, competitive funding, HDR supervision, collaborations, invitations, and other indicators of research excellence and esteem.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging undergraduate and/or postgraduate units in Statistics and/or Data Science, including statistical inference, and modelling.
• Capacity to contribute to the development of contemporary curricula in Statistics and Data Science, including statistical computing, data analysis, and reproducible practices. This may include engaging with academics from outside statistics, such as to ensure their majors are well served by statistics.
• Demonstrated computational skills relevant to modern statistical and data science practice (e.g., R, Python).
