Job Description

The Department of Physics and Materials Science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Physics and Data Science, beginning August 2026. The lecturer will be on a 3-year renewable contract, based on the evaluation of the department and administration of the college. The salary range is $70,000 - $75,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

The SMCM Physics Department received the 2017 Award for Improving Undergraduate Education from APS, and it was featured as a model in the report of the Joint Task Force on Undergraduate Physics Programs (J-TUPP) from APS and AAPT.

Non-sectarian since its founding, St. Mary's College of Maryland, a public Carnegie Baccalaureate, Arts and Sciences institution located 70 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., has been designated as Maryland's public honors college. Qualifications

  • Ph. D. in Physics or a related field
  • Teaching experience is preferred
  • Strong background in Astronomy/Astrophysics and Data Science

Teaching responsibilities include introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses, including introductory astronomy, and introductory and possibly upper level courses in Data Science. The successful candidate will demonstrate abilities and experience in all of the areas mentioned above.
