Compensation: £26,661 - £48,160 / year

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Lecturer in Maths (ESOL & Functional Skills) to join the ESOL 16–18 department at Sandwell College on a fixed-term, part-time basis.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Maths or Functional Skills practitioner who is passionate about supporting learners within the further education sector. You will play a key role in delivering engaging and high-quality Maths and Functional Skills provision to ESOL learners, helping students to develop the numeracy, confidence and employability skills required for progression into further study, employment and everyday life.

Working closely with the Head of Section and wider curriculum team, you will contribute to the continued development of the provision, ensuring learners receive an outstanding educational experience that supports achievement, retention and progression.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment across Maths and Functional Skills programmes for ESOL learners.
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons in line with awarding body requirements and curriculum specifications.
  • Undertake course tutor responsibilities, supporting learners academically and pastorally.
  • Track and monitor learner progress, attendance, achievement and progression outcomes.
  • Develop engaging learning materials using Information Learning Technology (ILT) and multimedia resources.
  • Participate in curriculum planning, development and quality improvement activities.
  • Support the development of effective learner support systems within mainstream programmes.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • A Level 3 qualification in Maths or a related subject.
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) at Grade C/4 or above.
  • Experience delivering Maths, Functional Skills or key skills across a range of learner levels.
  • Experience embedding functional skills and numeracy into teaching and learning.
  • Experience preparing and evaluating engaging learning materials and resources.
  • Experience of internal verification and moderation processes would be advantageous.
  • Flexible and adaptable teaching approaches to meet the needs of different learner groups.
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding

To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:

Accepted Qualifications:
  • DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • Certificate in Education
  • PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
  • ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education)
  • DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
  • DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject
If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998)

Not Accepted as Stand Alone Qualifications:
  • PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • CTLLS (Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)
  • SFHEA (Senior Fellowship)
  • Masters in Education
  • TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)

Central Campus Sandwell College is one of the newest FE Colleges in the UK and is a landmark for the development of education and training in the region.
