This posting will establish and maintain a pool of part-time lecturers with experience teaching Philosophy courses in designated fields of the discipline. By submitting your application, you will become part of an applicant pool. This posting does not necessarily reflect a current open position. The department will contact you if there is an opening that suits your qualifications for the Fall 2026 semester for the Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver. This posting includes both online and in-person teaching opportunities.

By submitting your application, you will be considered for this lecturer position. The candidate hired from this application will fill a temporary, non-tenure track position. The appointments will be part-time (less than 50%) and will be subject to a semester-by-semester decision, depending on the needs of the department and subject to budgetary approval.

Lecturer
What you will do:

• Deliver high-quality, inclusive instruction aligned with department standards and course objectives.
• Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support their intellectual growth and academic success.
• Contribute to student success by maintaining availability for consultation and mentoring during office hours.
• Participate in departmental assessment and curriculum development activities as requested.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

• Masters Degree in Philosophy, Ethics, or a related field from an accredited university.

Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)

• Previous teaching experience.
• PhD in Philosophy, Ethics, or a related field from an accredited university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of introductory philosophy, including core areas such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and social/political philosophy.
• Familiarity with ethical theory and applied ethics, including contemporary moral issues (e.g., justice, inequality, environmental ethics, public policy).
• Knowledge of logic, argumentation, and critical thinking, including formal and informal reasoning, fallacies, and probabilistic reasoning.
• Understanding of philosophical approaches to ideology, culture, and social identity, including issues related to racism, sexism, and oppression.
• Awareness of pedagogical best practices in teaching diverse student populations at the undergraduate level.
• Ability to teach and explain complex philosophical concepts clearly and accessibly to students from diverse academic backgrounds.
• Skill in facilitating discussion-based and interactive learning environments that promote critical thinking and student engagement.
• Strong analytical and critical reasoning skills, with the ability to guide students in constructing and evaluating arguments.
• Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to provide constructive and timely feedback on student work.
• Skill in course design and assessment, including developing syllabi, assignments, and grading criteria aligned with learning outcomes.
• Ability to incorporate inclusive and equitable teaching practices that support student success.
• Ability to teach a range of introductory and intermediate undergraduate courses, including courses in philosophy, ethics, logic, and social/political philosophy.
• Ability to adapt teaching strategies to different course formats (in-person, online, hybrid) and student needs.
• Ability to foster an inclusive classroom environment that encourages respectful dialogue across diverse perspectives.
• Ability to mentor and support students’ academic development, including critical thinking, writing, and reasoning skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in a collegial academic environment.
• Ability to manage multiple courses and responsibilities effectively while maintaining high-quality instruction.
• A demonstrated passion for teaching and a strong commitment to fostering students’ intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and personal development.
• A reflective and adaptive approach to teaching, with a willingness to continuously improve instructional practices based on feedback and self-assessment.

  Conditions of Employment
• Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.
• This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.

Mental, Physical, and/or Environmental Requirements

• This position may be performed on site, and will require the ability to sit for extended periods, stand and walk occasionally, reach with hands and arms, use hands to manipulate a keyboard and mouse, and have good near vision for computer work; often requiring minimal lifting, but may involve bending or reaching to retrieve items from shelves or drawers.
• This position may be performed in a hybrid or remote environment, requiring the ability to work effectively in a remote setting. This includes maintaining a dedicated workspace free of excessive noise or distractions, reliable internet connectivity, and the ability to participate in virtual meetings for extended periods. Employees must be able to independently manage time, remain stationary for prolonged computer-based work, and transport necessary equipment (such as a laptop and peripherals) between their remote work location and the office as needed.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $1,704 per credit hour (undergraduate courses) and $1,849 per credit hour (graduate courses).

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
